As my GF filed a change-of-address recently, we are being bombarded with snail mail of all kinds, much of what contains coupons and offers pertaining to "New residents" of the community we reside in. I cannot stop laughing over the sale insert we received from the local Denny's food chain today, as part of their special deal for new residents of the area reads: "Locally owned and operated...."

Do they actually think we are more likely to visit their restaurants if they are locally owned, versus whether they are owned by someone who resides in Outer Mongolia? Does it matter whether they are operated by staff who lives a block away, versus staff who live two counties distant? I think not.

Well, yes. Locally owned and operated means more of your money stays in your local economy. Its a big deal to many people. If it wasn't there wouldn't be all of these anti-big box store discussions.

Many of us do think it matters.
I live here because I want to, and I support local's because I want to.
I like farms, guns, jeeps and camo hats. So I support my neighbors that also like the same things.

Why should I send my money to someone that wants to shut down a farm because of a little dust.

It definitely matters, but it takes some skill in logic to realize why.

It definitely means a great deal of difference to me, but locally owned and operated means more at the local garage than at the local McDonald's.

Means a lot to me too....Walmart put at least half of our towns small businesses out of business years ago...Western tire, a Fabric store, tire store , 2 hardware stores, a sporting goods store...etc....Yeah Matters a lot...

People exercise control over their government by voting and running for office.
People exercise influence over the other people in their community by buying from and selling, or not, to the people there.

I thought he was ragging on Denny's, not on buying local.

I too would prefer to do all my business locally, but I won't eat at Denny's no matter who owns it.

I do try to support local business, WHICH THERE ARE OF THEM...which means a party store and a barbershop, but any other spending and shopping requires a 15 to 25 minutes drive and the local Denny's require the 25 minute distance to get there. I do wonder if the claim "locally owned" is true...it's not something I would care about investigating.

I assume Denny's is a franchise operation, at least for some stores. A local person could be the franchisee, and does indeed own the building, lot and equipment.
