Don't buy a Husky at a Big Box store. They are made cheaper for that market and the real dealers can't even cross reference them for service data. BB stores have no service or parts dept. I bought a 54" YTH24V54XKS at my tractor dealers. It is OK, but the grass catcher system sucks. After I bought it they told me I should have also bought the blower system for the catcher if I really wanted to pick up the grass and fill all 3 hoppers equally. I looked at the BB store 54" and it has the same catcher system. I will never buy another Husky mower. Oh it is a 24 HP Kawasaki engine which works very well. My dealer shop learned an expensive lesson; I bought mine w/ the high lift blades; well, they come with the standard blades so the dealer has to change them before delivery. Their junior mechanic did not seat the notches into the spindle and tightened with an impact wrench. When I had to sharpen blades, after fighting the bolts out, I discovered it. The matching spindle **** were all mushroomed. They had to replaced all three and I was W/O a mower for a month. Word to the wise; something to check before you take delivery on any that use that type blade.

Where I'm looking to buy is a mom and pop type place where I bought my Kioti, my husky snow blower and 576xp chainsaw. Not a big box store. They sell good stuff. I'm staying away from the big places.

Yea I saw that but it isn't right. That's the mower my dad has and it's a hydro. It's taken a real beating too that's why I was curious.

Edit: I looked again and it shows it as a K46...

I didn't notice the note saying gear is 2002 year only, so I didn't scroll down to see the K46.

Are you sure about this. I was just at my husky dealer and he had the same machines that I see at Lowe"s as well as all the nice ones as well. The website also seems to be complete.

Nothing is ever bullet proof. I took the Lowes 54" model # to my dealers and they tried to find it in their dealer data base and it did not exist. Before and after after buying mine I compared it with the Lowes unit. Different engine, lighter metal throughout, and different forward reverse system. Also huge difference in price for the Dealer model. Still, if I had to do it all over I would not buy either one. My wife hates operating it and I find it cumbersome. On a tight turn the front wheels skid around not roll around. I probably will not be happy till I can afford a commercial grade mower at $1000 more. Probably a JD or Kubota. We all make compromises driven by our pocketbook.

That sounds familiar. :) I'm mowing with a Cub Cadet LT1050 from TSC. As a mower, it is not really what I need, but I needed the $5000-$7000 between that and my dream machine more for other purposes.

I'm not a lawn fanatic, in fact I probably won't even mow most of our open area this summer. The 1050 gets the job done. It takes more care and maintenance than a better quality mower and it won't last as long.

If I get five years of use out of it, @ $2K the money spent is about a wash compared to depreciation on a more expensive machine. It's just not as enjoyable to use--like skidding front wheels and single rear wheel drive.

Such is life. People make their own priorities.

I drove by the JD store today and dropped in to look. There sat a X300 that I really liked... I'm not so sure about the husky now...

I would NOT buy another Husky in this class ever again. Got the LGT2654 from Lowes back in 2008. She only has 167 hours on her. I have broken two mower deck mandrels, replaced one mandrel axle and replaced several mandrel axle bearings. The deck gets greased on regular basis. The left rear axle snapped in half a year ago. And the engine has been leaking oil like it's going out of style which started soon after we got this mower. I finally bought a gasket kit and took the engine off last weekend. The gasket between the lower case and the upper case was completely miss aligned and torn. This could only have happened at the factory. No wonder it leaks like a sieve. I guess B&S doesn't build them like they used too.

If I were to ever buy a mower in this class again, it will be a John Deere 700 series or something comparable. B.
