Nah all you really need to be is from out of town...see back when I first moved to Maine I went up to local John Deere dealership and I was explaining to the boys there how I was from away, coming up from Massachusetts. So they said to me "Why you must be an exparht" I looked at them and asked how's that? And they said "Well everytime they is a job opening they need to hire someone from out of town because they's an exparht. So since your from out of town you must be an exphart too!"

That firearms expert at the trial is so misinformed that it's comical. Gotta wonder if he has ever shot a firearm and how tighter his groups became the faster he shot? LOL

On another note, I have a client here in Tyler that retired from Orkin as a senior manager after working his way up from doing treatments on houses when he started. He loves bugs and knows enough about them to be considered an expert. Now that he's retired, he travels the country testifying in court cases as an expert in whatever the case is about. He said that there are only three experts in the nation and that he is always getting calls. I don't know what he makes, but he did say that it's a lot more then when he was the boss at Orkin. Having worked on his house, I believe him.

I wondered the same thing about the firearms "expert" at that trial. I doubt he ever shot a handgun in his life.. or at best maybe test fired some into a water tank to recover bullets for ballistic analysis. He sure as heck never heard the timer go off, then draw, fire and hit the targets as rapidly and accurately as possible.

I haven't been following the trial. Does the South African legal system allow witnesses to be deposed before testifying in court?

I don't have a clue Steve. I have not followed it very much either, but the talking head reporting on what the states firearms expert witness had testified to, just pushed one of my buttons, hence this thread.

An expert is a person who learns less and less about more and more until they know nothing about everything.

Definition I heard many years ago at a former workplace.
