Takes a long time to load because there is a lot of data there, but it answers your concerns about weight and safety. It takes into account the crash tests, but also adds a consideration for weight. Size matters, but so does design. A Volvo S-50, although well designed for safety doesn't stand much of a chance in a real world accident with an F-250.
I question their data. They say that a 2010 4 door Expedition weighs 4890# AND a 4 door Expedition EL weighs 4890#.
Wikipedia says that they weigh 5801# and 6071# respectively - Ford Expedition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Autoweek says that the 2010 Expedition EL they tested weighed 6088# - The 2010 Ford Expedition Limited EL, an AutoWeek Drivers Log - Autoweek

I feel safer in a big vehicle but I commute in an accord. When it is bad weather I drive my wife's 4x4 Yukon XL (well now she has a Suburban). Those crash test figures assume running into a brick wall, not a bigger vehicle. If my commute wasn't so far I'd drive the big vehicle.

Just made a 300+ mile trip to a mid size city with the daughter driving both ways using I-69 and some pig paths.

It drove home the main concern for safety lies with the drivers and NOT their vehicles.

It seems like I just thought I always knew how to drive but now I am sure when I was driving with my learners permit I knew less than today. :)

Learning to drive without touching the brakes except for planned stops perhaps was the best thing I ever did and not sure why but expect my father played a roll in that 50 years ago.

When one sees a red light and cars lined up at it 1/8 mile ahead still do not take their foot off the gas but plow on to the last minute. Even if the light turns green it is going to take 10 seconds plus for the line to get started moving and if running 45-55 MPH that is NOT a long time. This just one example.

Monitoring risks developing in all four directions is not natural at the age of 16 for most of us I now understand. Learning/practicing defensive driving I now think is the best way to keep yourself and others safe when driving.

Learning how to not get tagged starts on the play ground at a young age and we need to remember that when we start driving. :)

When they repopulated the deer it may have help me be more visual. I drive different size vehicles but the ones that could wipe out a mother and child most easily causes me more concern because I had rather be killed than to kill someone that did not have a chance due to the size of my vehicle.

Practicing in ones mind where to run off the road in the most safe way/place can be a good exercise so when one reacts vs act your odds are better at doing the right thing.

I was taught it is the sudden unplanned stops that are the worse and they should be avoided.

I recommend the Subaru. They really seem to have done some very innovative things with their 4wd system, as well as design comfort and safety.

The rule is: SUV's are safer in a crash but you will have more crashes. Smaller cars handle better and avoid the crashes more frequently. So its one of those "pick your poison" tradeoffs.

Times change:)
When I was a kid, cars sold on Horsepower and body lines.
When I was a teen, it was HP, and some MPG
Later, it was interior space, and the latest gadgets.
Today, it's MPG and the fear of accidents.

Disagree, because the statement "you will have more crashes" doesn't always apply to SUV's. I have driven full size pickups and SUV's from 1978 to the present and never had an accident in any of those. Every accident I have been involved in during a driving career spanning over 45 years would NOT have been avoidable no matter what I was driving. Indeed, the worst accident I was involved in was getting hit head on by a semi tractor/trailer that slid across the centerline and no vehicle (small, midsize, SUV, etc) could have possibly avoided that collision.

What exactly is the difference between an SUV and an all wheel drive station wagon? Seems to me many vehicles are being marketed as "SUVs" (Forester, RAVA, Traverse, etc.) that are really just a station wagon. Or is it just a marketing gimmick now?

I think the original station wagon was just that, it was used to pick up luggage and (sometimes) people at the train station. Not much of that happening anymore, it would have to be an "airport wagon" to keep up with the times. :)

I'm sure that 'SUV' is a marketing term chosen to appeal to people's desired self image.
