Fess up, who doesn't have a Fire Extinguisher in there shop?

I have one in the shop right by my welding machine, one in the garage which is just outside my kitchen and one on my boat. Probably could use another one on my boat as I haven't checked it in years. I guess it is time to do some spring catchup on it.

I have one in both garages and a small one under the kitchen sink for cooking fires. I've never had to use one, knock on wood.

I don't think you could have one that is too big as long as it can be carried, that's a good point.

I keep several in the shop and the house. It drives the wife nuts but I save all those used squirt bottles from windex etc and fill them with water. I have them all over the shop and they come in handy to soak down something you don't want to burn or put out a little fire quickly because they are always nearby. Seems welding always has a habit of setting something on fire.

i get all mine refilled and checked once every 3 years. they have stamped tags. There all commercial units but since their in residential units they dont require yearly service. they all have pressure gauges on them.

I have a 10 pound dry chemical one on the gater because it is parked near the welding area and usually outside with me during bonfires, 2.5 gallon water one near the wood working area and an old but recently serviced 10 pound halonite on each end of the garage.

I have one in my basement hallway that separates my shop and furnace room (woodfired boiler). I take it in for inspection periodically and for the life of me I can't remember if it was free or just very inexpensive. I was told since it was a home extinguisher I did not have to have it checked, but it makes me feel better.

How do they inspect/check one without discharging and re-charging it?

Good to remember. I don't have one in the shop and the one in the house is I am sure dead. Thanks for the post. I was welding in the shop many years ago and I moved the plastic gas can away from where I was going to be welding and thought everything was fine. the problem was I put it in the way of my friend I was welding for and he put it back. I was welding and noticed my left leg was getting hot and found the gas can with a hole in the side about the size of a hen egg, with fire shooting out on my leg. I guess I got excited because I grabbed it an through it out of the shop, under my friends ton truck. I ran to get the extinguisher and left my friend to fight for his truck. He had it mostly out by the time I got back with a dead extinguisher that only went poof. Remember a dead extinguisher is worse than none at all, with none you don't waste time on something that does not work. If he had waited for the extinguisher his truck would have likely been toast or at least toasted.

At the hotel I used to work for the company looked at the extinguisher, checked for dents, dings, rapped on the bottom a few times with a rubber mallet and made sure the gauge was in the green.

That's hilarious, Ed. Did your friend accuse you of throwing it under his truck on purpose?
