Not wanting to off topic, but in addition to working extinguishers, how many people have smoke and CO detectors? Part of my job is to inspect staff accommodations where, by law, there has to to be working smoke detectors. I can't remember how often I'd look and not them, I've seen them put in drawers or even left in their original packaging. I once inspected a house where the security officer lived with his wife and three kids. Of the four smoke detectors found, two had no batteries and last two had dead batteries.

The CO detector?? While it was there, it covered by a clear plastic protector to keep dust out during long forgotten renovations!
There's a move to amend the Canadian Building Code to require smoke detectors, not only on each floor, but also in each bedroom. The thinking is a lot of people sleep with their bedroom doors closed. If a fire starts in the bedroom (smoking or just a short circuit), by the time the smoke detector in the hallway goes off the occupants will have already lost consciousness from smoke and toxic gases. A Fire Marshall once told me, fire doesn't kill people, smoke kills people.
I don't want to preach but CO detectors should be in every home with gas fired appliances or with an attached garage. They should also be placed near to sleeping areas, if they are in the furnace room you may not hear it go off upstairs in a bedroom with the door closed.
Sorry for ranting but it's one of those things that gets to me.
