I have 4wdLow, 4wdHigh, and 4wdAuto. I think I use 4-low about as often as I use 4-auto. Not a lot, but occasionally, and I'm glad I have them both when I need them. I use 4-high about as much as 4-low and 4-auto combined. They all have advantages over the other.
In addition to a fully selectable transfer case I have front and rear Detroit Lockers. I will never be without at least a rear E Locker. I use it about 1/3 the time I use 4 low.

I used the Auto Select (would work like the AWD system) on the 13 Suburban this winter on the patchy roads. Worked flawlessly. When we go home to GA, we stay in a cabin up a steep and usually washed out gravel drive. Used 4H on the 1st trip up and then "Auto Select" on the 2nd. Had minor rear tire slip and then the front diff did the job. I had the Burb in 4L once just to feel the low range on a steep decent down the same gravel drive. That's the one and only time it's been used. Wasn't needed by any means. I save 4L for the lifted Wrangler on 35's.I haven't needed or used low range in over 15 years..The trucks I have can do whatever I need in standard 4wd...I don't use them as tractors...Pulled trees, cars , trucks, whatever in high range with no problems...Not taking a $50k truck into the mud bogs anyway.
