from experience.. welding gloves are not enough!
my mom used to have a real mean cat. the only way the vet would give it it's shots is of you brought someone to hold the cat down.
I showed up with a good ( not cheap ) set of heavy padded gloves. that cat, ont he first bite, went right thru and into the middle digit of my finder like i wasn't even wearing gloves. I'd wager a coon has about the same mouth parts.
