Well sorry to disappoint those who though it was a pickup  I've been looking for a car to replace my 1996 Saturn SL1 (Manual) that I retired about a year and half ago. I considered an Eco Manual of which i've driven several thousand miles over the last couple years at work They can get up to 42-43 mpg on the highway and Mid 30's for my normal commute in the summer months. They are a nice car but a bit sluggish with the Eco final drive, The 12.6 gallon fuel tank was to small for me as was the tank on my saturn. The 151 hp and 264 lb-ft of torque is really nice for a car this size.
I've heard from several people who have had these as company cars that they were getting 50 plus on the highway at 70-75 mph. they have a 500 mile rolling average and one guy said is was at 47.4 for his normal commute 60% highway 40% city with his best 50 mile average of 54 mpg while driving though Ohio to visit family.

This was collected driving the 60 miles to and from my parents with ~29 stop lights round trip i managed to get stuck at at least 75% and 4-6 stop signs

45 mpg plus on the last 25 miles not bad for a new motor on. Not bad considering i can't go more than 5-6 miles without stooping at least once

That's some GREAT mileage, and a good chance it will improve as she gets broken in. I wouldn't worry about the filler size -most truck stops have car lanes with diesel and the smaller filler...

What was the cost difference between it and a comparable gas model?

Best score! Now that's funny.

I've been rocking my VW Golf TDI for about a year and I love it. Makes up for the 1-ton dually diesel sitting in the driveway. The cruze gets maybe a hair better mileage but the VW just has a sportier suspension. The Jetta is the same platform with a couple extra inches behind the rear wheels. 6-speed DSG auto with paddle shifting. I'm getting around 45 mpg mixed and I drive like a bat out of ****.

One thing I will tell you because it's a bit counter intuitive, get up to speed a little faster and then cruise. Better mileage than slowly building up speed. You're taking advantage of the boost so you get a bit of that free gain.

Enjoy the car...... and the fewer trips to the pump.

Dave,

The cruze diesel looks pretty good. I like most everything about it, except no manual transmission option. Since its main competition is the vw jetta, you would think gm would have offered that option since the jetta has it.

My 01 jetta tdi is still going strong, but would like a cruze manual!

What does one of those cost? I like it. Does it require DEF?

Don't get rid of your old VW TDI they get far better mileage than any of the new Diesel cars, sticks get 20% better than autos. These things are bringing big money now that all of these pollution controls are in place on the new ones. Very simple engine in the old VWs and built for longevity. I have a few customers with over 300k miles on them.

I am already seeing 2009 and up TDIs with plugged DPFs and EVERY one that comes through the door has a bad exhaust valve flap under the car (extended warranty). I DON'T see the 09 and up VWs ever holding their value like the old ones. Just too much money to repair down the road.
