What was the cost difference between it and a comparable gas model?

According to the Chevrolet web site the Diesel Automatic costs $1,180 more than the LTZ Automatic.

So they both cost the same to drive at about $0.10 per mile. Using 45 mpg in the diesel and 35 mpg in the gas and my current local fuel prices of $4.09 & $3.59 respectively.

Nice car I hope long term it works out for you. And I am a Chevy guy. I own 3 or them 01 and 13, 3500 diesel and a 06 trailblazer. I just don't see diesel payback unless towing 12,000 lbs regularly. I do so and, need diesel towing abilities. Just replaced trailblazer with 13 Kia, will know in 100,000 miles if that was good decision.
Good Luck with new car, very nice.

Not bad at all!
Thanks

I can just see this things at truck stops . They got a big hole in the filler ??
Yes it works with the fast fill nozzles

That's some GREAT mileage, and a good chance it will improve as she gets broken in. I wouldn't worry about the filler size -most truck stops have car lanes with diesel and the smaller filler...

Seems to be doing pretty good averaged just over 38 mpg today spent more time in stop and go traffic and speeds below 35mph

What was the cost difference between it and a comparable gas model?

It is $2400 more than a base 2LT But it has quite a bit more content than the base car aside from the engine and DPF/DEF systems. It gets Aisin trans to handle the torque over the GF6 Trans. Has Buick Verano Front dash acoustic treatment. Also has a Electric heater in the HVAC system started the car this morning and had instant heat. Bigger Brakes common with Verano and Volt - FNC Rotors, Volt/Eco Tires, Eco Shutter system probably a few other things I'm missing

Best score! Now that's funny.

I've been rocking my VW Golf TDI for about a year and I love it. Makes up for the 1-ton dually diesel sitting in the driveway. The cruze gets maybe a hair better mileage but the VW just has a sportier suspension. The Jetta is the same platform with a couple extra inches behind the rear wheels. 6-speed DSG auto with paddle shifting. I'm getting around 45 mpg mixed and I drive like a bat out of ****.

One thing I will tell you because it's a bit counter intuitive, get up to speed a little faster and then cruise. Better mileage than slowly building up speed. You're taking advantage of the boost so you get a bit of that free gain.

Enjoy the car...... and the fewer trips to the pump.

Thanks thats awesome the VW's are pretty nice buddy of mine has and 03 or 04 manual that he likes. I wish they had offered a Manual but this is something new for GM they probably figured the take rate would be really low and might not be able to steal people away from VW but thats purely speculation. Any thing will be better than my 18 mpg Sonoma 4.3L :D

Dave,

The cruze diesel looks pretty good. I like most everything about it, except no manual transmission option. Since its main competition is the vw jetta, you would think gm would have offered that option since the jetta has it.

My 01 jetta tdi is still going strong, but would like a cruze manual!

Stay tuned they might be something they offer in the future model one can hope. I would have bought a manual in a second. It was a tough decision between eco manual and Diesel Auto the Diesel Manual would have required no thought. It is interesting according to EPA.gov the VW manual and auto both get 42mpg on the highway test. I guess the DSG is pretty efficient. I havent looked but i bet you can probably get better with the manual in the real world by short shifting

What does one of those cost? I like it. Does it require DEF?

Base Price $25,810 there is a $1500 rebate right now. Comes pretty well equipped with leather, Color touch screen, remote start etc. it does require DEF. but GM includes 2 free years of maintenance on the diesel. 4 oil changes/ tire rotations/ DEF fluid. DEF is only about $4 a gallon and 5 gallons per GM sizing will last over one oil change generally which should average about 8000 miles based on oil life monitoring. One of my coworkers had a company vehicle and he went just shy of 12000 miles before the light came on.

Don't get rid of your old VW TDI they get far better mileage than any of the new Diesel cars, sticks get 20% better than autos. These things are bringing big money now that all of these pollution controls are in place on the new ones. Very simple engine in the old VWs and built for longevity. I have a few customers with over 300k miles on them.

I am already seeing 2009 and up TDIs with plugged DPFs and EVERY one that comes through the door has a bad exhaust valve flap under the car (extended warranty). I DON'T see the 09 and up VWs ever holding their value like the old ones. Just too much money to repair down the road.

Fred

Fred if you look at the customer input from owners and the EPA Scores corrected scores on the old ones to the new schedule. I'd have to say i disagree with your statement about the old ones being so much better on fuel than the new ones. The new cruze makes 36 hp (31%) more than a 2001 jetta For torque it makes 142 lb feet more than the 2001 jetta or lets just say over 2 times the stock motor according to the specs listed on edmunds.com

The cruze diesel does pretty good considering the epa says it does 2mpg better on the highway than a 2001 manual and 4 mpg better than the 2001 auto. Yes i know that their are other features enabling these numbers.

My buddies 03 or 04 VW decided to eat the camshaft at 80,000 miles and then the injector pump shortly over 100,000 miles he is extremely **** about oil changes and vehicle maintenance. Not cheap either.
I do agree that the DPF does bring additional challenges. are these people that have short commutes or try to hyper mileage and never get the exhaust up to temp or push in the clutch when going down hill.

I'll take the new one over a 10 year old vehicel but with that said if i had an old one i'd drive it into the ground before replacing it.

Yep. I did the cost analysis myself before buying it however the diesel is more fun to drive :D and the engine has character at idle reminds me of my tractor :D

So they both cost the same to drive at about $0.10 per mile. Using 45 mpg in the diesel and 35 mpg in the gas and my current local fuel prices of $4.09 & $3.59 respectively.

Hopefully what my coworkers have said about being able to get 50 plus on the highway is true. the base 1.4 struggles to get 35 on the highway at 75 mph. So far i've average 38-39 mpg to and from work as i would normally drive it. It builds torque so fast its hard to keep it out of boost. i can get about 31 in a base 1.4 and 39 if i hyper millage an eco manual

Congrats on your new car. Hopefully you dont have any reliability problems with the tier 4 diesel.
