mulching stumps after chipping small timber

We are going to have about 150 acres cut for chips. The land was cutover about 20 years ago and left to grow up. The largest trees are about 6" with most being much smaller. I was told that they will take everything and will be cutting right on the ground. Most of it is pretty small. It is right on the edge of being too small to chip.

Has anybody ever mulched land that was cut for chips. I was wondering how much more ground you could cover since all that was left was the stumps. Originally I thought I would be better off buying a mulcher and then reselling when I was done. I was wondering if I might be better off renting something instead.

Ronnie, it really depends on how comfortable you are learning to run a new-to-you piece of equipment. If you are, and you have a mulcher rental available locally, I would go that way for a day or two to get a handle on how fast the remainder could be accomplished. Since you're just talking stumps and not standing trees, the learning curve won't be as steep and I think you'll be surprised how fast it will go.

I would also get some pricing from contractors in your area for comparison.

9/10 when we do a chipping job just about everything on site is run through a chipper, they pay pretty good for random chips to be used as fuel in the chip mill. The only thing you will see after we leave is mostly just the stumps. So I figure you won't have as much to mulch or grind up

I've clean up behind chipping crews several different times, I normally average 5-8 acres a day depending on stump size and how much brush is left, but the crew I work behind usually cleans up pretty good so all I have to do is grind stumps an the cimaf will run threw 12" an under stumps in a blink. But if your biggest tree stumps are 6" I wouldn't surprise me if you could do 10+ a day.
