new holland tc45da 700 hr maintenance

I have a tc45da I bought this winter, it has just over 700hr and I want to get the 700 hr maintenance done, from looking in the manual the main thing I need to do is change the engine oil. where is the best place to get oil and a filter? is the dealer reasonably priced? or can you get better result from somewhere else? I know I also need to grease the fittings, is there anything else I should be doing at this time? it had the 600 hr maintenance done at the dealership I have receipts from previous owner.



also is it bad to switch from high to low range repeatedly?(hydro transmission) I find myself doing this, to travel faster then switch back to low for more grunt, will that wear anything out? or should I keep it in the gear i am using the most?

You can get the oil just about anywhere, the filter is most easily obtained from the dealer. A little more expensive, but not too bad. As far as switching from high to low, I do it all the time. It doesn't seem to have caused any harm on mine with about double the number of (really hard working with the loader)hours on it that you have.

Sniper, I've used Rotella 15w40 in my TC45 since new in 2001. I've never had a problem. I don't think synthetic is needed or prferred. The dino oil is fine and more frequent changes at 100 -125 hours will ensure it is clean and keeping your engine clean too. There is very little return on the cost of synthetic in my opinion.

Moving your range lever from high-to -low range is a no wear change that keeps your transmission loose and shifting well. The same goes for your rabbit/turtle switch. In my opinion, the more you use the shifters, the better they work. I've made thousands of shifts without a hitch in either shift method. Also, shift in and out of 4wd often to keep it working well. If it it tough to shift, just pop the front wheels up with the loader and it will shift easily. Make it a practice to shift in and out of 4wd everytime you use you tractor and the shifter will stay nice and loose instead of becoming stiff.

BTW: I use my dealer for all filters. I don't mind paying a bit more when I know I am getting a quality OEM product that New Holland stands behind. The extra cost of all NH filters is something I just pay and call it insurance. Rotella oil meets all NH specs, so quality is never at question on the oil.

Jinman has it right. I use the Rotella oil also. Good idea about picking the front wheels up to shift in and out of 4WD. Never thought of that.

i live in michigan and use to plow snow in the winter, would a 5w40 be helpful for cold weather starting? I try to always use engine block heater.

The operators manual lists the oil weight to use at various temps. 10/30 is about a thin as I would use unless you are at 20 below. I don't pay too much attention to how much oil I use when I change it, just put it in until it is full on the dipstick. That being said, I think it takes about 6 qts.

eddie48 is right. 6 qt with filter and a little left over because the filter only holds about 1 pint of oil. THe old bigger filter was a 6-qt change. As eddie suggested, always go with the Owner Manual on oil wt. choice.

I ended up getting rotella t6 5w40 full synthetic, because after rebate and the sale it was only 12$ a gallon, (I bought 2 this is the same oil I use in my garden tractor) which is cheaper then the conventional oil, I also thought this weight would do better in the winter.

If i don't put many hours on the tractor, my estimate is under 50 a year, should I still change the oil every 100 hr or once a year? if once a year before or after winter?

If you don't use the tractor much in the winter, then I'd change the oil before every winter. The problem is that moisture condenses in the oil, and the oil byproducts can be corrosive. So it's not good to let it sit all winter with a buildup of that stuff. Using synthetic oil helps, doesn't breakdown as bad.
If you use the tractor fairly regularly all year and don't let it sit, then I'd go the full 100 hours before changing.

If the major use is for wintertime, I would change it in the Spring, even if it only had a few hours on it since last changed.

Repeated running cold builds up contaminants fast. Your choice of synthetic oil will keep most in suspension, but better safe than sorry. Safe is cheap, sorry is expensive.

I had the same dilemma as far as spring vs fall oil changes. I usually do it in the spring now. I read quite a bit of differing opinions for the northern states, but seems most suggest to change it in the spring. They say if you are using it through the winter months plowing (I do), that keeps the moisture evaporated out. Oil breaks down over winter freezing too, so replacing the old stuff with fresh oil in the spring gives you many months of good oil. I use T6 5-40 too. It helps with the cold weather starting, and the extra cost of synthetic is less than $10 per year.

I'm going to change at least every 100, what I was trying to figure out is if I only drive it 50 hrs a year, should I run it to 100, do oil change, change in fall, or in spring regardless of hours driven. right now I'm leaning towards changing it in the spring.

Gang - does this engine suffer from the hydraulic lock from pouring the engine oil in too quickly? Might be a good idea to mention that to sniper 695 before he dumps in oil (if this is the shiabura with the crankcase vent issue - I'm not up on the 45da...)
