Buy new, used, or rent?

Well the shale's going on my trail/ track. The link to that thread's in my signature.

Trailer;

The pile. 20 yards made a dent.

The pile's a 5min trail ride away. I plan to knock down high spots with the machine I get, and fill in the low spots first to speed up cycle times. I'm only assuming 140 yards and .5 yard for the trailer. So going by that and say 15min cycle time. 4 loads/hr X 8 hrs = 32 loads / day. 140yards= 280trips/ 32= 8.75days

Yeah, I'm leaning towards a week rental... or even a month. Skid steer or excavator's around $1500 for 4 weeks. I'd just need to take a week of vacation for the week, but could pick away at it for the month.

Since shale weighs about 2 ton/cu yard don't try and get something too big to haul.

That pile looks ideal for Front End Loader work, no backhoe needed.

Sure we can't talk you into a tractor? With a nice tractor (w/ FEL) you could probably put a hitch on the back of the bigger trailer and haul BOTH trailers at 1 time.

4400lbs/ yard!?! Wow. I always went with 2800lbs... figguring that trailer was prob 1,000lbs my jeep did pretty good hauling it full either way. :)

I wouldn't mind a tractor... but to be honest I've got about $8K to play with. Doesn't buy much of a tractor. Whatever's left after renting will go as a deposit on a new atv or SXS. I need something to take the little one and have a bit of fun for myself... as well as haul a trailer and push snow. Big trailer's sold as well as the Jeep.

Around the outside I could just shovel, but as I get closer to the center I was having to pick axe... not to say a loader with a tooth bar couldn't...

No, not 4,400 lbs. 4,374 lbs per Harmony Sand & Gravel
/edit - but that is probably solid shale

And your ton is bigger than mine :)

Well coincidentally $8K is about what I spent for my B7610 tractor w/FEL and a boxblade, used.

Let me ask this,

Just how many acres of land do you have and how many trails?

I am only suggesting renting if you have no other (or very minimal) use for equipment afterwords.

But it is starting to sound like to me that you could put a small tractor to good use. Something like a B-series kubota. Or even a BX. What you are doing isnt really hard work with a small tractor. And sure it will take a little longer with a smaller bucket, but if you buy a tractor.....

I guess I can sum it up 2 ways.

1. IF you think you will have a need in the future, for maintaining the trails, and other odd jobs and cleaning downfall, buy a tractor. 8k is a sufficient budget for a good used small tractor.

2. If you absolutely dont want to own a piece of equipment, for whatever reason, then rend. For the size equip you are talking, it dont make sense to me to buy and re-sell. The market (at least in my area) is flooded with all kinds of small equipment. I think

I've got 4 acres. One trail surrounds my property witch is the "track" and what I plan to smooth out with gravel... another is the "connector" trail that connects my first trail with existing trails that are on water commission land (lots of it) I plan to smooth out just to speed up gravel delivery to the track.

Like I said I could put a small tractor to good use, but I'd rather and atv or SXS that would get the work done, but still be fun afterwards. I can't afford both.

I stopped in to see Hertz and they no longer are able to give deals on rentals :( I guess they got their hands slapped. Anyway, they can rent me a Deer 329D (tracked) for $1149/ week. 15% tax, 14% insurance, and $200+ tax delivery and pick up... so $1711 all in. Just add fuel.

Cat Rental quoted me a 247 for $1330 tax and insurance included plus $287.50 drop off and pick up, so $1617 all in. Just add fuel.

With your land, I'd buy a tractor for sure. And who says you cant have fun with one afterwords?

Wait until you can afford an ATV and then buy one of them. No point in throwing money at rentals when you have the means to buy. And it sounds like there will be plenty of work for the tractor. But tractor work is my idea of fun. No ATV required.

My tractor IS my ATV!

My take on this is simple. An ATV is a toy and will never be able to do the work that a tractor will be able to do. Trail maintenance and to do lists on properties always grow and get added to especially when the property is over 3 acers so that makes the tractor a NEED and the ATV a want. That is simple and would have me looking for a decent used tractor and putting a new ATV on hold till I had the tractor and the immediate work done. The tractor will hold its value long after the ATV is worth nothing but scrap. Besides you seem to have an ATV for fun already so what is wrong with keeping it for fun now and upgrading to a new toy latter on.

You stated time to do the job would require taking time from work? Vacation time should be spent with the loved ones having fun not doing work around the homestead . I would add to the cost of the rental the amount of a weeks vacation pay, then again that same pay to fully justify the time wasted on work to be done rather than enjoyment time while on vacation with the loved ones! At least tripling the actual money lost with the rental way of doing things!

My fun time with the loved ones is valuable to me and getting to the point of being able to enjoy that time, is best served with a good machine that can get the job done quickly. Today for instance I cut up then dug out a few trees cleaned up and leveled off the area then went out to the far end and moved a good bit of shale, about twice what you call a dent in your pile . The best part is I was able to do it when I felt like, never felt rushed and still had the time to pull the Bike out of the garage, wash it and take my other half for the first ride of the year. We went and met up with some friends for a nice relaxing ride and then stopped off for a good meal at one of our favorite spots.

OOPs I almost forgot about moving those two boulders out of the neighbors property for him. Poor guy was out back digging away by hand trying to expose enough of them to get them out while his little ones were out having fun with their toys (dirt bike and ATV) while his toy sat in his garage unused, what a way to spend quality time? If he had purchased a small tractor like say my old JD755 when he got his ATV a few years back instead he could have gotten a used or even a new ATV a year or two latter and actually had the pleasure of rideing with his kids rather than spending yet an other day working while they played with that WANT sitting Idle in the garage!

Shall we go into the importance of choosing a want over a need and the example you could be setting for your little one as well.

That is some very good advice. The difference between YOUTH and Experience talking.
