In a pasture that has both weeds and grass it can use a spayed. It's the chemicals that you use. A broadleaf weed killer will only kill the weeds not the grass unless you have a broadleaf type of grass. Using a lawn as an example I have Bermuda grass growing. I can pour a broadleaf weed killer on it directly and it won't do anything to the grass.
This is exactly correct. Have sprayed pasture with a 2-4d solution for years. Unless you have a major spill in one spot it leaves the grass unharmed. Only kills "broadleaves" but that does include clover. Here is a link to what I use. Ag Spray Equipment - Farm, Lawn, Garden, Spot Sprayers, Parts, Pumps, and Tanks.
And as far as I am concerned forget about using any of the purple dye to see what has been covered. It is expensive and for what it costs you can afford to overspray a little or wait a week and spray what you missed. Another thing is to get as big a tank as your tractor will handle. Tramming back and forth to refill with water takes more time than the actual spraying.
