Carpenter license, money grab or what?

I'm not going to be a big believer in "licensing" until we require some bare minimum licensing standards for becoming a parent. ;)

In Ontario it is just another "revenue management tool" [to quote the premier] being imposed on the public. Any "red seal trade" in Ontario, which is any trade such as HVAC, carpenter, mechanic, electrician etc. now has to pay a fee to the Ontario ministry of Colleges and universities. I have been a licensed automotive and truck and coach technician since 1977 and have always renewed my license every 5 years,,,,, now I have to belong to the Ministry of Colleges and Universities club for which I must pay an annual fee or I can not practice my trade. Oh ya the new fee is much more than the fee I used to pay to renew my licenses. Now $130 per year for each license versus $160 for both every 5 years before

main reason is to find more money they can waste ...

as a secondary by product, it locks out all the cheap labor across the river from Quebec .... and puts an automatic damper on the housing industry by driving the cost of construction way up.....

its a tax grab , another boondoggle , another way to waste money and make more positions for appointees ( friends of those on high ) ... nothing to do with making things safer or better controlled for the consumer ....

Exactly!

And westcliffe01 excellently describes the consequences of tolerating this governmental intrusion.

Or, to license a true professional who has actually taken the time and effort to be legit. And, more importantly, to protect the public from imposters pretending to be a carpenter.

It would be great if that were true. That sounds good as theory. In practice it doesn't work that way. However, it's always sold to the public as a way of 'protecting' them from unlicensed ,unscrupulous impostors who are crooks and thieves, etc, etc.

Then they license most of those guys and the one's who are now licensed wind up keeping the competition down to their own kind by lobbying the regulators.

A big part of my job for our firm involves interacting with several state regulatory agencies. I see it regularly. :D

we're talking Ontario here .... you know , the fiberal politicians that drove us from a power house province down to one that ranks below California in fiscal standings ( just above Greece ) ... with the highest prices for hydro in north america, most restrictive regulations for industry ... etc etc etc and all in the last 6 years ... they have the toilet paper touch ... every thing they touch turns to sh*t ....

how do we know they are not telling the truth ? their lips are moving ....

sorry about the RANTs but ya gotta live here to understand the stupidity of it all ... ( no wait I take that back, you've all probably got similar stories .... )

now they're promising a wack of cash to improve infrastructure in Ontario ... oh, ya .... 1/2 of it will automatically go to Toronto for transit upgrades , guess where the majority of voters are located ? the rest to be dispersed across the province IF you apply for it.

but it won't be doled out until AFTER they get re-elected ...

That may be true to some extent and i think good inspectors also help to keep people honest.
