Chupacabra found?

Well, since it is now dead, I have to assume that it was put down because somebody decided that it was in dire straights and the kind thing was to kill it quickly.

So, we are left only with speculation and the short video.

Highest probability is that it was a native animal which met with unfortunate situation. From the size of the animal, I can think of only two which have the same body style and size...coon or possum.

Looking at the images and from my knowledge of both animals from hunting and taking a large number of both when in my youth, I vote for coon.

However, I'm not buying the mange theory....cases of mange I have seen result in bare patches or balding patches, but patches of hair remain.

I saw no hairs remaining...so I'm thinking that the poor animal was born with a genetic problem leaving it completely hairless and possibly a collection of other anomalies making survival very difficult. It did seem to be in poor condition and very hungry.

If we discard the above theory, then we are left with considering any animal world wide which might have been acquired as a pet then released into the wilds of Victoria area...and there are true wilds there, trust me. Some pastures are 10000 acres under one fence.

So, I guess, our best opportunity to examine a chupacabra has once again slipped away...

And that reminds me of back when I was working in the Yukon at an asbestos mine & mill. They trucked the asbestos out (palletized 100# bags) and had trailer bunks set up specifically for the truckers to stay in while they slept between trips. One trucker decided it would be a "good idea" to catch a really young bear cub for a pet. Naturally as soon as he grabbed the cub it started crying for mama bear and she came running while he was trying to drag it inside the trailer! Fortunately he decided to let go of the cub before he got it inside because if he hadn't, that sow would have torn through the door and trailer looking for the cub and likely would have severely injured of killed anyone inside...and there were others inside. Needless to say he was fired immediately.
I once had a coworker come back at the end of the day telling about climbing a tree trying to catch a cub... when I commented about mother bear he replied "Adult bears can't climb trees  Not long after that one of the foresters was telling about watching a mother and her cubs in the top of a poplar tree, breaking off the branches and eating the buds.

The tree climber was a recent college grad; he held both Forestry and Wildlife degrees.

Yep, an adult bear can't climb a tree, and politicians can't tell lies!

There is a special name for people who believe adult bears cannot climb trees. "bear poop"

Had one fall out of an oak tree, into the George Washington Canal/Dismal Swamp Canal once, missed our little row boat by about 5'. Then tried to climb in with us and almost capsized the boat, we beat it with paddles until it gave up and swam to shore. That's not as bad as the time the Cotton mouth dropped into the boat with us and my buddy shot him and a put a nice 00 buckshot hole in the bottom of the aluminum boat!

If that would have been anything worth investigating I'm quite sure scientists would have swarmed that place and "El Chupacupra" would have become a much studied guest of the state. Instead what you have are a couple of out back coo koo birds gaining their 5 minutes of fame and the local news partially going along with them. You know how it is in the country, nothing ever happens so any news is big.

Along the Dismal Swamp canal and in the swamp, there are gators, bears, bobcats, cougars, 4 kinds of poisonous snakes, several evil spiders, red wolves and nowadays, coyotes. Don't know if I'd be so nonchalant like I was back then, walking through the woods.
