Husqvarna Chain Saw-chain races at idle

I have a Husky Model #345.

I've been having an intermittent problem
with the chain racing at idle.

It seems to run fine for a while and then begins
to idle at higher speed and the chain races.
When it is warm this issue comes and goes-
sometimes drops to low idle with no chain
movement and the next time I stop cutting
the idle stays elevated and chain races.

How should I approach this issue?

Check for an air leak . Check to make sure the carb has not vib. loose, or that a rubber hose is not cracked and leaking.

If it only happens when the saw is warm to hot, I would look for an air leak, perhaps at the carburetor mounting area. While it is happening, spray carb cleaner or wd40 around the base of the carb. If it slows right down, you found the leak. If it also happens when the saw is cold to cool, then adjusting or cleaning the carb would be in order. Saws usually idle fast on overly-lean fuel/air mixtures.

Agree, carb or air leak at carb, or cracked vacumn line. Clean your air filter thoroughly too, and report back results.

Sounds like a classic air leak!


Don't procrastinate, 2 cycle engines running lean will melt the pistons. Don't ask how I know how much a piston and cylinder for a chainsaw costs....
