Whenever a hydraulic pump is present hydraulic fluid is what is used with grade appropriate for where you are.
That is in lieu of 80 or 90 SAE .
My take is that pump or not better to go with hydraulic if for nothing else than price consideration.

Any well known brand of gear lube will work. Do not use hydraulic fluid.

Not always true. Some hydraulic pumps are designed for motor oil.

Like these Case/Ingersoll garden tractors.

If you use hydraulic fluid they will not drive up a hill!

My compact telehandler uses 15w-40 motor oil.

6' wide, 6.5' high and 13' long. Tire size is 14x17.5.
Top speed is 15.5 mph and it will lift over 5,000 pounds!

I'd go by the book because 80W-90 gear oil is readily available today (back when the book was written there may have been straight 80 or straight 90 but 80W-90 is today's equivalent.

If the tranny has bronze bushings, like on the ends of the shafts, rumor has it that GL-5, containing sulfur is bad for them (combined with water makes for Sulphuric Acid) and GL-1, straight mineral oil is recommended. Most after market independent and some chains keep a bucket or two around . WW in a town south of here stocks it too.

Some folks have converted to 134A which is a universal tranny/hyd oil that replaced 80, 90 and 80W-90 in their Fords and why not MF also? I had a couple of MF 35's and as I recall it was the fluid of choice as the hyd pump operated off the PTO shaft.....been a long time, but I still have the manuals and could look it up. Oil is lighter and winter performance is improved but is thinner, like 15 to 20 weight and if your seals are worn out you may have leaks with it. I think in the mid to late '60's it replaced gear oil. My TO-20 used gear oil.

machines that want 80 or 90 oils from yesteryear.. you can use an 80w90 gl5 MT1 oil that is safe for yellow metal ( look fo rthat MT1 rating ).

As to piloons comment about pumps needing hyd fluid.. etc. keep in mind that old ford and fergy pumps were scoth yoke pumps.. and yes.. they were made for heavy oils...

ps.. all that said. in many cases you CAN use a quality UTF fluid depending on the application.

check out your machine. see if it is shared sump or seperate sumps and chose the appropriate fluids...
