Go Away GM

Maybe I missed it, but when the cars 'shut off' was the ignition switch just going to the off position or to the lock position?

If it were going to lock then that is really bad and I can understand all the crashes. If it was just killing the motor I partly blame the motorist for not paying attention and not knowing how to handle a basic emergency situation. Regardless, not a good situation, GM definitely hasn't handled it like they should have.

I bought my daughter a new 2006 Cobalt and the other day I tested it out and is what happens is the power steering assist goes and power brakes go (no steering lock). So I explained to my daughter if she does by chance bump key and turn it off to simply use a little more arm and leg strength. I read the teens that died in one of the accidents listed were not wearing seatbelts but GM took the rap because the airbag did not deploy.

My understanding is that it went into the accessory position where the driver lost power steering and power brakes. IMO, they should be treated like Toyota was but I won't hold my breath.

I checked our Maxda3 and you can turn the key to off position and lose power assists but the car is very drivable.

I truly believe we are now in a society where people just will not ever accept accountability for their own negligents.

Steering does not lock. Possible air bag system was not working due to other fault that the owner did not have fixed when the light come on. I work for Chevy dealer and lots of lower valued car people don't fix some things. Because they want cheap and don't want to spend money to maintain.

I know some of you don't like GM and I know they have a serious issue that needs resolved. How ever Ford,Dodge, and GM helped get this country to where it is today long before Toyota, Honda,Mazda etc. ever set a tire on US soil. Most of my family has owned all US brand cars since I was a child, Ford,Dodge, and GM. About all of them has been a good vehicle over all. Some of my family even retired from GM, and Ford. There is nothing wrong with a foreign car as I have been around many of them and from what I see they have allot of the same issues American cars have. It's sad in my opinion what has happend to the big three auto makers. I know myself I have no reason to switch from them at this point in time in my life. Also I see allot of comments about how Union workers are paid huge amounts of money and don't do nothing. Funny some of my family members where there for almost thirty years and just got up to $20.00 per hours when they retired. As a matter of a fact I was told as a child to never work for a auto manufacture. Then you here about retirement pensions. Yes they do have a retirement pension for the employees and in my opinion they deserve every penny. I know many people that have started a job in a factory and walked out the same day because they could not cut it. Secondly just like Social Security was to be set aside for the tax payes the same thing was suppose to happen for the auto manufactures employee pensions. The money went into the accout and was set aside for the employees. Problem is the companies started dipping there hands into money that was not theres. People can say what they want but a huge amount of the population will have a big problem in the US of trying to retire in the next 30 to forty years. They will be allot of people working when they get old because they have to work not want to work.

Might as well add most people dont know it but most of your foreign car maker workers make as much as American car manufacture workers but it rarely ever shows up in the news papers because they put the extra money out as a bonus.

From what I've read the key can actually go to the lock position and then fall out. When it does the steering wheel will lock and the air bag system is turned off so it will not deploy in a case of an accident. If that is the case then GM's only recourse is to go down the "we are the new GM" yet I'm not sure that's going to fly. The "old" GM knew about this and didn't disclose it as a potential liability during the bankruptcy proceedings. Either way GM is going to take a hit because of this. Trying to duck out of potential law suits will only make the pain worse. My guess is GM is going to shift to manufacturing and selling in China.

"Corporations are people (too) my friend" -Mitt Romney

I agree, GM should accept responsibility for their actions.

I've read this whole thread and nowhere did I see a post mentioning that the workers were any way responsible.

My uncle still receives a nice retirement from GM 26 years after retiring at 48.
