Perhaps building a few more nukes would be much better than the keystone pipe line...

You wouldn't expect the Whole Earth guy, esp. one living on a boat in San Fran Bay, to be pro-nuke, but that is one of the interesting arguments that Stewart Brand makes.

Whole Earth Discipline - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I've read some extracts from that book, reading the entire book is on my To Do list...

I think it would. While a moderate liberal, the only way we are going to get ahead is to push nuke / fusion energy. Solar and wind cannot produce enough to make up for Coal. Not at this point anyway. Nuke technology (the latest versions) are very safe, use most of the fuel leaving much less waste, and generate tons of energy on a small scale. Saddly the US has not fostered, or should I say, promoted, the new ways that nuke plants could work, instead we rely on 50 year old design because it is tried and true (and unsafe). Instead it has let fear (both liberal and conservative if you want to be political) manage the message.

If reading is not your thing this is a good way to get a start on the pro nuke conversation.

Has anyone done any experimenting with alcohol for gas powered cars or tractors?

Why push nuke, there is lots of oil and gas for thousands of years to come. It's the all natural fuel.

South American countries use sugar cane effectively. It is an efficient crop to use to generate alcohol. Doesn't buy votes in the Midwest though....

Ohh Dear .. I will probably get yelled at for this , but I drive a Prius and have done now for over 8 years .. ( I gave the 1st one to my wife at 250,000 klm and bought myself another one ! ) Prior to Prius ownership, We drove Toyota Prados for the previous 5 cars over a 12 year period.
Prado was big and comfortable but i just couldn't stand pulling up to a service station ( gas station) and throwing $ 200 down a tube.. I drive up to 800 to 1000 klm a week here in Sydney traffic for my work and needed to get some costs under control. Brought my weekly fuel bill between the two cars from $ 300 a week , to $ 65 a week!.. So over the last 8 years , thats close to $ 10,000 a year saving!!!
OK.. the Prius isn't as Big or imposing as the Prado's but I can stomach the embarrassment each time I fill them up!.. I didn't buy them to save the planet.. I bought them to save my pocket!
Mechanically they drive like any 2 litre car.. so they arent rockets.. but they are dirt cheap to run! and us farmers LOVE the Dirt!
Cheers
Bob
