Loren, I really hate to interject on this and I try to stay away from discussing my own viewpoints, but what does the price of fuel have to do with the cost to Society? What does the cost of fast food, cigarettes, alcohol, etc. have to do the cost to Society? Can you imagine having to pay $20 for a crappy McDonalds hamburger because "some" people eat too much junk, fail to exercise and are genetically prone to poor health. The "full cost of fuel" should follow the same formula as the cost of any other manufactured item. Items do not "impose costs on Society" but rather Society pays the cost for the purchase and consumption of items and any issues arising from them. The statement that "...the price of gasoline in the U.S. covers the cost of producing and distribution gasoline but it doesn't reflect the costs that gasoline consumption imposes on society in the form of traffic, congestion, pollution and global warming." is a perfect example of what is wrong in the world, not what is right.
I am sorry, I prefer a lighter mood on message forums, but that statement is a load of crapola. If that same philosophy were carried out to every item made in the world, there would soon be no items made in the world and economic collapse would follow. People have to at least try to govern themselves, educate themselves and make rational decisions by themselves. When we do not, then Society, as we know it, collapses and the only ones making decisions are the ones we elect to office, but we will all be too stupid to make wise decisions on whom we do elect. It sort of leads into why we are where we are today.
End of rant, sorry if I upset anyone, but at some point reality needs to creep back into our lives and politics need to go away.
