Also, does anyone remember Ford's "park to reverse defect" ? It involved Fords made from 1966 to 1979 and killed 98 people. Ford's "fix" was mailing the owners a warning label.

That's right, forgot about that one.

I had one of those.. I never had any trouble with it. But then again I never left my car in Park with the engine running and the brake not set either. But lots of people did.

My son was driving a Hyundhi Accent right after college. His phone rang (my wife calling him) and he reached for it and crossed the centerline and hit a pickup head on. The air bag deployed. He climbed out the window after the accident and sat on the sidewalk until the cops came. The front end was collapsed. He was lucky the car crumpled the way it was designed to. Stupid- yes, but I am grateful for the safety devices. They work for the most part.
When I used to ride a bike, my wife insisted on a full face helmet instead of the half helmet I wanted. She said that she didn't want to live with someone whose face was scraped off on the road.
I never wear my seatbelt- unless I see a cop. Pick'em and lose'em.
While we are complaining about safety devices, maybe we should get rid of the flashing yellow traffic lights and stick with just red - like we used to have. We all have fast reflexes don't we - turn on a dime!

I always wear seatbelts on my vehicles with belts... most of my vehicles are too old for seat belts.

Do have one vehicle with airbags and more often then not, it is the vehicle I use for long distance.

Even airbags are not fool proof... my 90 year old neighbor was badly injured as a passenger from airbag deployment... her friend had taken her shopping and didn't see a 4" pipe post when he was leaving the parking spot... instead of backing out he went ahead and it was just enough to deploy...

My friends face litterally looked like her skin had been peeled of and her eye glasses damage one eye badly plus a broken nose.

We've built several offroad buggies using Jeep Cherokees, Grand Cherokees, Comanches, etc. First thing we do is disable the airbag.....

In airbag's defense, there are more stories like tcreeley's than ultrarunner's

A neighbour told me that a coworker hada fairly new BMW. He hit a pole and the airbags went off, the whole bunch of them: Thus blasting through the steering wheel, dashboard, door panels and the pedestrian airbag damaged something too. The repair costed 12.000, of which 1500 was for the busted bumper, the rest collateral airbag damage.

Renze, very true. Accidental discharge is very expensive. But again, consider the intent of the design and tcreeley's story. Without airbags he probably would have buried a Son over an auto accident.
