I have a 1963 or 4 can't remember, Ford 4000 industrial with the overdrive manual 4 speed transmission. My dad bought it slightly used in about 64/65. It has always been a good tractor, but it sat for about the last 15 years in a shed. The engine was froze, the clutch was bad, and all the sheet metal rusted off it. I am pretty handy so I basically took it apart and replaced or repaired most everything I could see or think of. Including the clutch, brakes, radiator, fenders, etc.. I converted it to 12 volt and repainted it. It looks and runs great.

Here's the bad news. When I swept the floor after getting it all back together and running great, I found an o-ring on the floor in the sweepings. Don't really know where it came from for sure. However the lift arms don't work and the PTO will not work consistently, and when the pto does turn, you can literally grab it and stop it by hand. There are no noticeable sounds or whines.

I have removed the Allen plug from the pump and oil does flow out. My suspicion is that the o-ring went around the hydraulic lines where I broke the tractor apart to replace the clutch. Could that be the reason why both the lift arms and the PTO do not work. I would really appreciate some assistance as I have no real idea as to what to try first.

I have tried to look at the parts manual and the repair manual for ideas, but they don't seem to address the "o-ring" issue. Please help! Thanks very much, Jerry Rosa, rosastringworks@gmail.com

for starters, how big is the o-ring?

I'd say it was 1.5 inches or so. I thought I saw where there is supposed to be an o-ring around the lines. But I haven't been able to find that again in the manuals.

The transmission has a separate lever for low, standard, and high range. Then 4 speeds forward, and one reverse, in each range. I forgot the technical term of what they call it. My dad called it an over and under transmission. Sorry for the confusion.

A simple way to say it is there's a total of 12 speeds forward and three reverse.

where's the levers / sticks.

I have seen 6x4 / reversers and the 4spds with a torque converter ahead of them.

this have a single stick 4 f 1 rev on the trans, and then a dogleg lever on the side of the trans housing ( usually left.. could be right, depending on manufacturer ).

take a pic if unsure.

A dog leg lever on the left side would be a good description of the lever for three ranges.
