Poisonous snake, first one seen this year

I killed a 4 foot snake in my pond this morning. I was walking around the bank and it slithered out into the water about a foot in front of me. It came up floating on top (full body) so I went to the house, got my shotgun and dispatched it. Don't know if it was water snake or moccasin but it is dead now. Regardless of species, I don't want them laying around my pond or eating my frog friends that eat my unfriendly bugs. I usually kill 3 or 4 small copperheads each year when weeding my flower beds or edging the sidewalks. Never seen an adult just the juveniles.

I've been doing a lot of jobs over the past two years for folks moving from the city. I always warn them about snakes (wild hogs too), mainly because most of them just plain never thought about it before.

The good thing is that the wild hogs will eat the snakes. Just not enough of 'em!

Here's a few more unfriendlies. The city folk I did this job for didn't realize that copperheads lived in the woods.

Today my wife was reaching down to remove the leaves from this pepper plant when . . . . she almost had a heat attack.

HMMM, those recycled cow feed tubs make a good snake (copperhead) trap also.

don't you just love it when one of those are near your hand or foot... I know I sure do.:shocked:

Copperheads are testy, rattlers will run or at least make noise often times, but cottonmouths and copperheads will both make a point of biting you.

I've had packs of them chase me and my boat in spring and fall around South Mills, NC years ago.
By packs I mean 3-5 snakes, not hundreds.
