Rifle targets-need ideas

When I was shooting long ranges, I used empty pop and oil cans filled with water right to the top. When they received a hit they would explode. They weren't 'auto-reset' though.

Yes, paint certainly works when you've got the magnification to see close up at 400 yards.
I'm hoping for a reaction target so it's visible with the naked eye.
Wave a flag or something...

If you can see a bullet strike at 400 yards, you can be on my team anytime.

target with threaded rod on back side and a weight on the bottom of the "rod" ... nut on rod to adjust tipping point .

( think of those "tipping water drinking birds " that dipped the bill in water then bobbed back up )

balance the target up or down till you get an almost equal balance , with a slight favouring to keep the target upright .

target is "hit" and falls backward and more horizontal ... after a few seconds, it self rights.

A spotting scope would be great but no one wants to drop the cash.
That or heard.....by the naked ear.

Lets see. They can afford time and money for targets, rifles , scopes and ammo. Yet nobody can find the $ for a spotting scope?
The other concern, who is shooting without hearing protection?

Periodically we will see the target swing at 400 yards but not all the time.
We are shooting at the rectangle plates you find on train tracks.
Roughly 14 inches by 8 inches.
I will post a pic when I get home.

$400 spotting scope or $400 in bullets.....?

You do not need a $400 spotting scope to see what you need...you can find decent enough scopes for as cheap as $50 that would suit your needs...!

You guys eyes must be better then mine, I can't see a .30 hole at 100 yards let alone 500. And if you are shooting iron sites at 500 good luck. I have tried high power silhouette a few times, but the targets fall over.

I think we are missing some facts here, what caliber, size of target, type of target...you said steel, is it mild and you poking holes in it or AR(whatever) steel. More info might help out a bit.

Yes, a cheap spotting scope would be sufficient.
There are a few things I'm happy to spend little on but a spotting scope isn't one of them.
Buy 1, cry once.

And again, looking for something that can be seen with the naked eye.
