If you ever want to shoot in a real Highpower match, you will be shooting at a black bull, so I wouldn't paint your targets white.
Plus, you'll need a spotting scope if you ever shoot in a match, so you might as well buy one now.

I'm surprised you can't hear a clang even with ear protection on.

I used to be a firearms instructor for a Police Agency. Certified by both a state and federal agency. We shot thousands of rounds to get qualified. When i went to training we would start at 50 yrds with a handgun and move forward and sometimes shoot in complete darkness. Learned a trick about shooting in darkness that I will not divuldge.

Afterwards I taught for many years. We did the standard silloutes with no more than 25 yrds. Anyway after standard shooting there was a metal rack that had some 5x7 metal plates on it that we would just practice on. When you hit them they would fall back and stay down. Not mandatory, but just to unwind a little and have some non stressful targer practice where you were not going to be scored. Don't remember the exact way it was made but was homemade. Something like that that would be good. Think there were 5 or 6 targets on a rack.

This is an interesting post.

First you tell us how much you know. Then you tell us that you won't "divulge" the knowledge. What was the point of that?

Would be like saying I've been a John Deere mechanic for 50 years and have seen just about everything but unfortunately I don't share my vast knowledge with anybody, especially not on this forum. There is no real point in telling someone that other than to be a jerk.

Then you tell him to use pieces of metal that have to be manually setup every time they are hit. I would have thought that in 50 years of shooting you would have seen something better.

I use a swing also,, and for targets we use 10" saw blades painted bright colors with a piece of tape over the hole "for the lucky ones". I weld a short piece of chain to the blade and use a chain link to fasten it to the eyes on the swing..

I removed my post some hopefully I won't be considered a jerk anymore.

No plans for match shooting. We just like to get out as a group and bang steel.
Sometimes you hear the clang and sometimes you don't.

At our range we have some rifle gongs that are 2.5" thick mild steel. These usually don't make much noise and are so heavy they don't swing. The plates that are made out of 1/2" AR500 are light enough to swing and make noise. Steel core ammo will ruin your steel targets at just about any range.

MGM flash targets might give you some ideas:

Thanks for the reply charlz.
I'm not concerned about ruining my steel targets as I get them for free and in mass quantity.
It's pretty impressive seeing a bullet hole thru a 3/8' piece of steel!

How loud is the "twang" of the AR 550 plate?
I would consider a few of those.

How about some of these.
They could text you back or use a two way radio for hit or miss.

Nothing spectacular, bigger the plate the bigger the 'ring'. We have a mile target that is almost a 4x8 full sheet and I can hear it ring pretty good from other parts of the range when they are doing a mile shoot ;) Overall a visual indicator is much better than trying to rely on sound. That MGM concept gives you a use for all those real estate signs they put up on the corners every weekend ;)
