Or living _in_ a fire station. Colfax, Wa Fire Dept garage bay caught fire around 1am. Burned all the trucks, all the equipment and almost got the City Town Hall which was attached. Problem was that the fire crew could only stand and watch as they couldn't get the trucks out in time. The only "working" truck they had was "Wimpy" an antique one used in parades and none of its hoses had the right connections. All the nearby towns responded but by the time they got there nothing was left.

I don't want to give the impression of being critical; both of my younger brothers are retired Firemen. I don't think that the public in general knows how dangerous the job of Fireman is; although both of my brothers retired in pretty good health, I know of several others who inhaled too much smoke, fumes and chemicals and ended up crippled with COPD and other maladies...and then there's those who lost their lives in the fires. So to set the record straight, I have a great respect and appreciation for our firefighters.

Interesting how sometimes the need of the few outweighs the need of the many. I live in Vermont and in our largest city is the Air National Guard Base, it so happens they are slated to replace our aging F-16 fighter jets with the new F-35. Holy crap did that create s--t storm, all these transplant, Pablum puking , self-righteous, never served their country and consuming everything this great country has to offer are up in arms. They claim the noise will lower property value and effect quality of life. IMO this is what happens when we swaddle and coddle everyone. Just my two cents.

Discussions like this make me appreciate my close friends, for who they are.

I hope they keep the F-16s in mothballs, just in case...
