Why Are There Two ON Positions on New Holland Fuel Strainer Bowl?

You can challenge me all you want, facts are facts. There is no fuel reserve to be had. New Holland dealership employee since 1996. I've serviced more tractors that use that fuel bowl and valve than you have probably seen from the road.

I totally agree with Rick as it's impossible to attain a reserve fuel supply utilizing one fuel tank.

As far as the NH that the OP has problems with and how it's is configured, I can't argue the point with Rick but your statement is incorrect. Some motor cycles have one tank with a reserve built in. I was a Vespa scooter owner/parts supplier for years and all Vespas have one tank and a reserve

My Ferguson TO30 tractor has a reserve supply built in. It works just as the oldgrind says:

if the valve is in the tank like with m/cycles, & it would select either from a port down low or from an inlet tube extending an inch or so upward.

So yes, you can have a reserve fuel supply utilizing one fuel tank.

Funny thing is, I didn't make that statement. Might want to check on that. You happen to be correct on the reserve supply from a single tank using a fuel tap with a stem and bottom port.

My first car was a 1957 Volkswagen Beetle. It used the system you describe. You switched to reserve by turning a lever on the firewall. The fuel gauge was a stick and you accessed the tank by opening the trunk. One good thing about the stem was that it helped prevent gas line icing. I found that out the hard way one cold day when I switched to reserve and the car quit.

My bad for being another motorbike guy who didn't know the TC35 had the inline bowl/valve vs tank mounted. Rick said enough in post #3 for those who do. (apologies, guys, no sarcasm!)

btw: Substitute 'inlet' for 'tank' (what I'm sure he meant) in Jim's post and he's dead on, too. (you guys rock & I do know that.)

Looks like the OP has two "on" positions w/o reserve and ... maybe shouldn't over-think what could have been coincidence .. like I might have done?

Oldpilgrim, I've taken heat for asking naive questions in school :duh: ... but I've never skipped a class.

Wait a minute!! I'm not post #15??? I used two fingers & a thumb!! ...:hissyfit:... ("turtle ...")

it is still possible that this " on /off/on " unit is used on more than one machine and may well have a "reserve" function elsewhere , or as was stated earlier, be used on another machine that needs the on/ off ability in another application .... depending on how it is mounted ....

live and learn ....

On a fuel tank with a reserve it would seem that if you hadn't used the reserve for several years the reserve pipe could get plugged up becasuse of no flow thru it. I think I remember this happening on the old Fords and Fergusons.
