I have available a small diesel tractor with a 5 foot finish mower. The tractor has Turf Tires.

I want to start mowing a 4 acre field as a LAWN. The field is very flat and smooth. No ruts, no rocks, just field grass. It has always been cut with a brush hog but I want to move to a groomed look.

Today I was walking the field and took note of many, many small, stiff upright stick-like plants no bigger around than a pencil and 4" - 6" high. Their brush hog cut tops are sharp.

Will these "sticks" puncture Turf Tires?

I'd like to think that once I get this field finish mower cut a couple of times I'll be good to go.

Your thoughts and wisdom will be appreciated.

You don't mention the actual "size" of the tractor, but I would venture a guess that plant stems would flatten, rather than puncture an R3 tire, unless the tires were lawn-mower grade and the "plant stems" were actually small trees...

I guess I'd take a look at whether they snapped off easily by hand, and if they do, you are probably safe...

My .02 for what it's worth.

I would echo that. Probably take a look at the construction specs of the turf tire. If they are actual tractor tires, chances are they are a heavy duty multi-ply Kevlar or something like that. Should be good to go. Iv'e got turf tires on mine and it goes all over sharp sticks etc. all the time.

4 ply vs 2 ply would surely help too I'd think.

FWIW, before my mom sold her place I mowed about 2 acres of corn stubble about 6 to 8 times with a BX that had turf tires and a belly mower. I didn't had an issue as most of the stubble as well as growing vegetation would lay down under the tires. That being said I can't say it was one of my best ideas.

If as discussed above, your talking about good quality turf tires, I'd say run what you have. Even if you have to go back and repair a puncture, it's still more affordable than buying a set of ag or industrial tires.

I run over everything with mine, after 32 years they are worn down, but not punctured.

I have turf tires too and I do about 4 acres of field mowing...so far, no problems (knock on wood).

Before making your first cut, wait for one day after a good rain so the 'stobs' are well hydrated and supple, rather than brittle.

I've been running turfs on my field mower for three years. The rear tires are the original from almost 30 years ago, and the fronts got replaced three years ago due to mostly age related air loss. As far as punctures go, I've been lucky so far.

I'm amazed at the difference between today's tires, and the ones from 30-50 years ago.

I bet you won't see any tires built today still in use in 2050...Let alone the tractors.
