The only unusual problems around here with batteries is with our ATV's. They don't have a big stator in them, and batteries don't get recharged very well when running, which weakens the battery and is hard on an already marginal stator. The 100 watt stator on my Yamaha Grizzly finally burnt up, I replaced it with an after market 300 watt stator and an AGM battery. No problems now. The lead-acid battery in the wife's Polaris needs replacement about every 2 years, it'll get a AGM battery this year.
"Motorcraft" batteries around here are actually Interstate batteries with a Motorcraft sticker on them. When a Ford dealer needs batteries, they call the local Interstate warehouse. Interstate slaps a Motorcraft sticker on them and delivers them to the dealer. The Ford dealer them warranties the battery. I suspect many of the smaller battery retailers do the same.
A local battery plant is just 5 minutes up the road from here. They produce whatever they are contracted to produce. They were making Sears Diehards for a while, don't know if they still do. They do push out a lot of batteries from that plant (Holland, OH).
