I was baling today with my 1855 oliver and when I would lift the tail gate up to dump out the bale my remote lever
started to not go back to neutral very easy, it got to where I had to smack it back real hard with the palm of my hand
to get it return to neutral, I have not had this problem in the 36 years I have owned it, anybody got any ideas on this?

thanks amberg

Best thing you can do is to see if there is any trash in the spool jamming up things.

It could also be rust in the cans on the bottom of the valve.

I would remove valve, inspect, clean and relube.

If the valve is operated by cables, check them out also.

As J.J. says.

Often the detent retainer mechanism consists of several ball bearings held in place by a spring/taper shaft mechanism. Rust may have damaged the balls or perhaps the lip that the balls catch into is damaged or maybe a broken spring. I've only fixed one, didn't even have to buy parts as I was able to use balls I had in stock and smooth the lip on a lathe.

Use copious amounts of grease to hold balls in position for reassembly. Also, the tailstock on a lathe is handy to compress the spring to get the balls in place - - some sort of a kluged press or a second set of hands would work just as well - - not under a great deal of spring tension.

Before reassembling, I added a small drain hole to the cap to help drain any condensation and another to add grease without having to disassemble.

I have got about 90 more acres of hay to cut, so I think I am going to pull the lever back manually and not go
all the way to detent, and hold it there until the tail gate is up, and the same on the down stroke. it will probably be a pain in the rear, I will have more time to tear into it when I finish this first cutting.
thanks guys

Loosen the cans just enuf to get a spray nozzle in and squirt in some oil. Tighten back up. Should give some temporary relief.

I guess that I was not thinking, I have 3 more remote outlets on the tractor, so I decided to try one that I can use from the valve on the fender, and it worked like it should. that tells me that the tractor valve does need to come off and be rebuilt. thanks for making me think!!! I had never thought about the valve that I had mounted on the fender for the loader & the wood splitter, plus it is easer to work.
