Bobcat CT 122 HST
Own a 2010 Bobcat CT122 HST (Diesal), Saw a 70 foot plume of white smoke raising from the exhaust while my neighbor was using it to move some gravel with the loader, I ran over to to find that the engine was screaming with the throttle down and ignition off. we shut it down by cutting off the fuel. Towed it to the house with sadness and a lump in my throat, spent many fun hours on it and saving $ to buying it, Anyway diagnosing the probable cause; 1) During the last month or so I had been noticing a drop in hydrolic performance when using the loader bucket. 2) I Checked the engine oil dipstick for water/ radiator fluid but revealed at least 5 Qt's of fluid but no water/radiator fluid. 3) Checked hydrolic fluid level and it was almost empty. Needless to say I think a seal went out in the hydrolic pump. The engine is a Dadong 22Hp HST. Dealers initial thought was cracked block due to accidental use of gasoline instead of diesel and that I need to replacement the engine ($6,500?). I had fuel looked and analysed by others and confirmed it was diesel and not gasoline. So will replacing the hydrolic pump solve all my problems or are they any thing else I need to rule-out?

Wow!

Hang-in there Emile. I'm sure many solid opinions/suggestions will be forthcoming. These Bobcats are very well engineered.

How many hours on your machine please?

How many hyd pumps does the machine have?

Did you not see hyd fluid on the deck, or do you not check fluid every day?

Add some of that fluorescing oil to the hyd tank and the run it a little, and if you have a leak, by shining a black light on the hyd lines, and components, you will see the leak as a greenish/yellowish glow.

Was the engine crankcase over full. That might explain the cloud of white smoke.

Sluggish performance can be caused by work pump, cyl seals leaking, valve leaking.

You really need a flow and pressure test to determine if the pump is good.

After that , install a 3000 psi hyd gage in the system and use it to monitor and troubleshoot the hyd system.

A good test will show if the pump is putting out up to 75% or rated flow.

If a fitting or anything is leaking fluid, fix all that.

If you need a diesel engine.

Emile;

Sorry for your troubles. This is another example of never lending out your expensive equipment. The last time my tractor left the property it cost me 1,200.00 bucks. I did however receive a bottle of scotch from the person who borrowed it for the work done.

I have a neighbour who borrows everything because he is too cheap to buy his own stuff. He borrowed (among many other items) my lawn fertilizer spreader for two years in a row, (I didn't use it during this time) and when I finally went to use it the wheels fell off due to rust. He obviously didn't clean it properly after using it. He denied this and when I told him I would no longer be lending out my stuff to anyone, he went home, boarded up the entry to my place and hasn't spoken to me since! This was four years ago.

It's too bad it came to this but that is life. He used to come over at least twice a week for a couple of cocktails and that went on for over 6 years. Not once during that time did it occur to him to bring a bottle or a couple of beer, NOT ONCE IN SIX YEARS.

I guess I'm the idiot to let this go on but I tried to be a good neighbour. The bright side is my bar bill has gone down about 50 bucks a month!

Have the hydraulic pump and injectors checked out first, then go from there

Like DK mentioned. You most likely blew off an injector tip, this will let fuel to run into the engine uncontrolled causing the white smoke/engine run away, shutting off the fuel was the only way you can shut them off.
Just be careful when turning the engine over, the failed tip can fill the cylinder with fuel, hydro locking it and when rolling the engine over you could bend the rod Jim

Re: Bobcat CT 122 Loss Hydraulic power

It has 499 hours, it has one hydraulic pump that runs everything and I am going to have the mechanic work on the pump first, thank you all for the kind advice and let me correct my spelling mistake "Hydraulic".

I had the same issue when my hydraulic cam shaft rocker arm broke.
