As I posted NO I do not own a pond.., I own land that abuts to large public hunting but I do not hunt in my pasture. I have permission to hunt on a large farm nearby.

My point is there are good people who dont take advantage of the privilege granted by landowners who are willing to allow limited access.

If Charley Pond guy had not granted permission to fish on his pond we would not have known each other. Same as the hunting I have hunted there for 15 years and always volenteered to help with any task they need ( only once have they asked and I stacked hay all day)

bucktaker...Do you have your own pond where you fish ? Do you have your own land for hunting ? Just curious. Thanks

You are very fortunate to have friends and neighbors that allow you to use their property for your enjoyment. Please understand all users of other folks property are not as kind and considerate as you must be...I can only speak for my experience with being generous and kind....You can read my previous posts for what actually happened to me trying to be a good and generous neighbor...NO MORE !

Reading all the posts, let's recap. Liability, litter, over-fishing, tearing up trails and that general disrespect/lack of appreciation. Further proof of the "no good deed goes unpunished. Our state collects a lot of license fees to maintain public fishing waters. As a private pond owner I would give those requesting access to it a map or phone number unless you know/trust them to comply with YOUR rules.

Ya know, I always tried to help out people that gave me privy to hunt or fish... that may be bailing hay, sharing the take, or mending a fence...

Scratch my back, I scratch yours... Put them to work, but be fair, share a drink or two under a shade tree, you just may make a good friend for life.

If they can't do that, then, its no fishing for them... pretty simple.

Works only if you agree on the arrangements up-front though (might be a simple nod of the head). Good friends will never need the reminder that they owe you. Leeches are different.

This ^^ for some. There's good folks all around, and who would pay that forward. btw, how about that guest who insists you grab a pole and join him or "I'll come back when you can, then." ... ('bet there's bunch of 'em reading this thread...)

I guess it depends a lot on the type of folks you have around. In most area's and towns I have been around, most everyone is good and God-fearing. These are the type of people who would ask to fish a pond even if there was no "posted" signs up, and are people I would always welcome if they asked. Most would not even ask to fish if the land were posted. It is a good idea to go over your "rules" with them to prevent abuse. Rules could include: ask each time, and/or if you bring friends along., only fish certain days, hours, months, etc., "catch and release only". Personally I abhor that practice and see it only as a "senseless maiming", and/or unnecessary education of my number 2 protein source (venison is #1). I think public water fish population regulation is best left to the state reg's, and one should always stop fishing when the desired, legal number and size of fish is caught. That way, you eat good, and no fish is unneccesarily harmed. I put "catch and release" fishing one step below golf, which at least harms no good food source. Certainly both are fun, but I am a lot happier using my free-time to "bring in the bacon". My favorite thing about golf is that it keeps some folks away from the boat-launches, and away from some of my favorite "fishin-holes".

Most ponds in my neighborhood are largemouth bass / bluegill combos, and rarely have just the right balance, meaning one of the two should be harvested at all times. Both are good eating. What species you want kept, possibly what age class, etc. should always be part of your "rules". The "rules" need to be kept up to date, and fishing for certain species ought to be banned when/if populations get a little low. The good folks should be called up whenever there is a rule change. By letting the "good folks" in, you can pick some good friends, who may be called upon when you need a hand. The more "good-guys" you get on your side, the easier it will be for you to keep out the "bad" ones when you are not around.

The net affect of them signs is to keep most of the "good" folks away, while they are interpreted as "good fishing" or "good hunting" by the bad ones who you really do want to keep away. Luckily, them bad ones tend to be a relatively unintelligent lot, and are easily "duped" by something like a big "skull and cross-bone" sign that says something like "WARNING, water is toxic due to heavy chemical pollution. Do not eat fish. Severe illness may result from touching contaminated fish and eating may be fatal. Maintain minimum downwind presence of 50 yards, and upwind of 10 yards unless wearing oxygen supplying breathing apparatus (OSBA). Breathing of airborne fumes may cause severe illness, inferttility, or death". The more official looking you make it the better. Use lots of "fine print" Most of them (not all) can read. All know the meaning of the big, red, skull and cross-bone. If you want to waste some cash on posted signs, do it, but I think you would be farther ahead shredding and using it for camp-fire kindling. One thing is for sure, they wont get you no friends. Who couldn't use a few more of them.

as I understand it, the (private) pond is on the OP's property. Posting a sign that says "TOXIC water, no fishing" ... might work. cheaper than a fence or guard dog.

too many environmental headaches to deal with, if strangers fish your pond. I'm a nice guy, but I would only allow friends or family near the pond. if someone does something that creates a bio / environmental issue, you are the one that deals with it. if you post "no fishing" at least you might have a case if someone unauthorized sneaks in.

private lake is pretty clear

about 17 years ago, my neighbour who's property was higher up on the hill, had their maintenance guy clear their large pond of debris... in doing so, an edge gave way and 10 moments later we had a basement full of mud / water to the 50 inch mark on the walls and door. there was no time to divert it elsewhere. We knew that water runs downhill, but we did not know that our house (1/2 mile away from the pond) was to be a direct hit. The neighbour was good about it, and after an insurance claim, professional repairs, and content replacement ... the bill sat at about $100,000. (yikes) 13 yrs ago work moved us to a different community

So in our new homeplace and out bush hogging tonight when an suv rolls down our road. (Over 1/2 mile long.) They see me so they stop and get out. They ask if they could fish I said not tonight I'm cutting the chest high grass around the lake. I said if Im around its ok. Then they asked if they caught a big one if they could keep it. You know I'm all about being nice and when I was younger I'd try and fish where I could. I see ppl all around here that have signs that say no fishing without permision. Maybe this is why.
The one kid was nice and said if I needed help he'd be willing to. Trying to butter me up I guess. What do yall think? I am planning on putting a gate up anyways maybe this would slow this down.

I say, it's up to you. If you don't mind, let them fish. If you do mind just say no. It's your property, no explanation necessary.

I have 3 ponds on my place and have never had any issues with letting people fish. Mostly friends and family, but I have allowed many others (friends of friends) fish. I enjoy seeing people (especially the kids) catch them and if I can help to make a good childhood memory, then that's all the payback I need.
