Skunk problem

I have learned to use a long, long garden hose with a pressure nozzle to herd a skunk. Just hope the hose doesn't kink and the nozzle doesn't plug up. Put the baby skunks in a pile if they won't wander off or in a container if they will wander off, in a place where you can watch them and can get a safe shot. When the mother skunk comes to claim the baby skunks, then you can shoot her. If the baby skunks are too young to know what is going on and you don't want to shoot them, you can slice off their heads with a spade. Also, a skunk on the run can outrun you, and it can go into any door you leave open.

I have learned ...... a skunk on the run can outrun you, and it can go into any door you leave open.
I bet that was interesting...

Personally, a .410 with bird shot is the best way to get rid of a skunk.

We had skunk problems for the first 20 years we lived here. We found it was one of the neighbors who lived about 1.5 miles away burned their garbage. Actually they were roasting food for the skunks. They moved away and the skunk problems went with them. Now I may see one, possibly two skunks a year.

After spending ten days out of our house lat February because a skunk sprayed under it I can sympathize with you. I shot three before the ordeal was over. I used a 12 gauge 3" with #4 buckshot. That's like shooting each one 41 times with a 22 long rifle. Each shell holds 41 quarter inch pellets. I shot all of them at least twice. Made me feel a little better. I did find out, on the last one of course, that if you shoot them in the hind quarters they won't spray. RSKY

Closest loaded weapon is my choice. But after the little stinkers are down I take care not to touch them with anything that is not disposable. Down here they are the #3 carrier of rabies. Bats and foxes take #1 and #2.
I'm not that big a fan of all those shots in the tummy if you come into contact with any blood or saliva from one of them.

Treating the grubs is the answer, but it can be expensive, and not very effective unless done in the spring.

I treated the areas the skunks hit the most, with Grubex for a couple years, and have not had a lot of trouble with either since then.

I had a guy who trapped them, and then baptized them in the lake.

A man and his pet skunk walk into a bar. It's about 5pm, but they're ready for a good night of drinking. They start off slowly, watching TV, drinking beer, eating peanuts. As the night goes on they move to mixed drinks, and then shooters, one after the other. Finally, the bartender says: "Last call." So, the man says, "One more for me... and one more for my skunk." The bartender sets them up and they shoot them back. Suddenly, the skunk falls over dead. The man throws some money on the bar, puts on his coat and starts to leave. The bartender, yells: "Hey buddy, you can't just leave that lyin' there." To which the man replies: "That's not a lion, that's a skunk."

Forget about moth balls and shooting them, You just need a good outside dog who hates skunks. Now I would have trouble believing this but I was lucky enough to see it. We had a black lab when I was still at home that hated skunks. His method was to charge at a skunk full speed and toss it six feet up into the air with his nose. While it was coming down he was in four wheel drive getting turned around before it hit the ground. Then it was chomp chomp chomp from end to end, shake the living day lights out of it, repeat until dead. There was very little smell as the skunk was rather dazed after hitting the ground and didn't really have a chance to use his ammunition. The dog would go for a swim in the pond and a few days later there was no smell.

The objective is to disable the skunk without damaging anything else. Then you can finish it off.
I have shot hundreds of skunks. When I was in law enforcement, in a town of 1300 people, another deputy and I shot 36 skunks in one night, between 11:00pm and 4:00am.

I started out using a 12ga but quickly switched to a .410. It's not as loud so fewer "I heard a gun shot" calls to dispatch. ;)

Never destroyed any property and all skunks were shot with the blessing of the sheriff and all the city councils in the county.

Just keep in mind the firearm safety rule - know what is behind your target. :)
