I wanted a dedicated diesel mower to reduce the amount of ethanol-free gas I had to buy. It's expensive and not as widely available. I know that some say it's not a problem to run 10% ethanol in JD gas engines, but I knew I wouldn't want to do it. I ran ethanol-free in my X500.

Speaking of X500s, you may wish to consider one, or something else in the X5xx series. For two to three acres of mostly flat land to mow, even the X500 is arguably overkill. I only mention this because it seems you are not opposed to a gasoline engine. JD is quite proud of the X7xx series, and for your use would most likely be unnecessary. The X500 is very stable and plenty powerful.

Hadn't even thought about the ethanol situation. Guess that's another reason to go with the diesel. I agree about the overkill, but I really want the 60" mower. Thanks for the insight:thumbsup:

IMHO go diesel.I bought a JD X740 (2 wheel drive)with the diesel option and 7 Iron deck.It sips fuel compared to my Ingersoll with the 4020 onan 20hp gas engine.

Based on above comments, I would go diesel.

In my opinion get what you want, the 1K is a wash. The 1K extra for the diesel buys a fair amount of gas, but the diesel has a cool factor and will likely return that 1K when you part with the machine.

I like the way you guys are thinking. Looks like diesel is the way to go. Chances are that I will be joining the group of proud JD owners.

Ethanol with a fuel injected engine is not a problem. You don't even have to treat it. And I ran ethanol gas through my carbureted 425 for 19+ years. Never had a problem. Never touched the carb. I did start treating the fuel the last 5 years or so, but not so much for the 425 but more for the other machines that share from the same cans. You don't need the diesel. Get it because you want it, but you don't need it.

The diesel motor will out last the mower deck if you service both properly. The gas motors in the older 4x5 series would last 1500 to 2500 hrs on the average. But the diesels would run 4000 to 5000 average, but the bodies and decks were pretty well gone.

I honestly think gas will eventually be phased out, it is simply to inefficient, and the ethanol issue will only get worse with time as they increase content percentage.

You already have diesel equipment, go diesel. I intend to buy everything diesel that I can from here on in. It's just too good to ignore.

Go diesel and a big deck. It is nice to get fuel from one source and the diesels in the X700s are fuel sippers. I never heard of any complaints about the amount of fuel they use.

Happy day today. On my way up to the dealer this morning with check in hand. They will be prepping the X750 with the 60" quick attach mower deck. Hopefully I can get delivery scheduled for Monday!

Congratulations on your decision. This comment may be too late since it is now afternoon, but consider this. Get your best cash price and then ask about the 0% finance for 60 months. Give them 10% down and balance (probably less than $200/month) over 60 months. Put the cash under your mattress (<-; for a rainy day. You may not even miss the $200/month and will be like a FREE lawn tractor.
