Thanks for the reply.
Sounds like something I should do but I am waiting to see just where I stand with mine now. I have not had a good heavy load on a hot day yet. I did flush mine with auto-parts store cleaner and got some stuff out but not a lot.
I have another question---where is the no. 1 position on your pto when looking at it facing the shift.
Reason I ask is I think mine is on the bottom right BUT the operation manual I recently bought shows it on the top left. Called Hoye and they did not know except for the manual's info. Thanks

sitting on the tractor... PTO shifter should be on the bottom left for about 540 RPM

I would concur on that statement as well for the YM2500/YM2610 in the same PTO 4 selection shifter.
These Yanmars share a bunch of engine, powertrain and body parts ... 336, 2500, 2610, 3000, 3110, 3810

Lower left = PTO-1 542
Upper left = PTO-2 685
Lower right = PTO-3 1005
Upper right - PTO-4 1268

At or around 2200 engine rpm typically.

Thanks for the help on the PTO position for 540 RPM, that did seem to be the slowest to me just by the sound of the attached bushog. Now that I have used bottom left position sitting on the tractor it makes everything sound right when cutting the weeds and grasses. Also it has not overheated since I started using the 540 setting.
I wonder if using the 3 position as I was doing was the cause of my overheating problem in the past. I also feel lucky not to have damaged something by using the wrong speed.
Thanks again for the info.

Well, PTO-3 would run the RPMs at TWICE the speed "if" running around the 2,200engine rpm. Thus, the more speed, the more the heat. I've kept the bushhog and finish mover no greater than PTO-2 685rpms, but at a lower engine speed, therefore the balance comes out around the 540rpms without the higher engine rpms. Mowing is so much quieter and enjoyable. Does your hour/meter show the four PTO rpm speed curves? If so, you can understand what I'm talking about here.

I noticed some scale building up in my 3110 and drained it down far enough to hold a gallon of vinegar. I then ran the engine up to normal operating temp for a few minutes and shut her down. I left the vinegar in all night and drained it the next morning and flushed the system twice. The water I drained out was brown and the inside of the radiator flues was much cleaner, not perfect but noticeably cleaner. I then put my antifreeze mix back in and everything was OK. I do this to my water cooled motorcycle every 2 years or so and it keeps the system clean.
