new kubota 5100

Like others have said make sure he is using the hydro correctly. What ballast does he have? Depending on how the tractor is weighted I could see it stalling instead of spinning in medium.

You can get a hydro on an mx5100?? Wow didn't know that. That's an awfully big tractor for a hydro I'd think. I'd want a gear tractor like yours with that size of machine.

I agree with your assesment completely. My mx 5100 is gear drive and it is a beast. Tons of power, and works like a rented mule. I test drove the hst and did not like it at all. Not saying there isn't a place for it, but not on a true work horse. My 2 cents...

Sounds like he's using the go pedal as a gas pedal. Some new owners of HST tractors want to mash the pedal to the floor thinking they will get more power....they're just trading torque for speed..It took me a while when I got my 1st HST..

it gets worse with the new Kubota auto-HST advance, where the RPM goes up with "throttle" position; and as such it appears to work for a while.
I find that I have to remind myself a lot that that is not how it is supposed to worlk

I'd make absolutely sure he's using the hst properly as others have said. I don't know for sure, but I think mine would spin the tires in medium range at high throttle before hitting the relief and I have loaded r1s and 4 fewer hp. Make sure he's at WOT and when the rpms start to drop he eases up on the hst pedal.

Depending on the conditions I would think low range would usually be best for this type of work.

Regarding the hst on these tractors, it's awesome. I use my tractor for growing veggies and using the loader. Hst was the only way to go. Also, the biggest Kubota they make in hydro is the l6060 with 9 more HP than the MX 5100, and I think John Deere has one around 65 HP.

I have a L4240 HSTC and the only time I have had to put it in LOW range was with a full six ft.box blade.

The MX5100 is about 600 pounds lighter than my L5740 base tractor. Don't know if your friend has a loader but that adds a lot more, and my L5740 will spin the tires on gravel in mid-range no problem so something doesn't sound right - except the MX has a different hydro than the Grand L. I believe the MX has only a single displacement motor, and imp not sure what the pump and motor displacements are on a MX. I see the list price for a MX is less than half of what the list was on my Grand L so I assume you do lose some features and hydro capability may be one.

Yeah funny thing... I find it is more of finding the right engine speed for the task than how much you press the pedal.
