Ford F-450 with 6.4 diesel

   / Ford F-450 with 6.4 diesel #51
Did my usual search of Gov Deals.com tonight. There is a fairly low mileage 6.4 in a F-250 Ford. Bidding was in the 300.00 dollar range. At 50-60 thousand miles the engine was in the bed of the truck. Front bumper was missing, but that should tell you about the cost of fixing one.

Buy it and put a 12 valve cummins in. Then it would be a decent truck!

Im not sure on that.
I was just taught that a bad spray pattern would tear up stuff.
Most 6.0 problems were head gaskets/egr coolers/turbos/hp oil leaks.
Most 6.4 were cooling system related while I was there. The radiator would leak causing the water pump to cavitate and erode parts internally.

Agreed - a bad spray pattern is never good - part of why I use a fuel treatment all the time. Judging by the last fuel filter I changed (on schedule, for my 7.3), that is working well as the filter looked brand new.

I was thinking that the newer injectors were smaller orifice, running at higher pressure.

How many of the 6.0/6.4 problems that you saw were due at least in part to the wrong coolant being used ?

I'm really not sure what the current bid on an in-progress auction has to do with the cost to fix a truck.

Not many. I worked on birth defects. On 7.3 they made the anti cavitation additive. 6.0 had motorcraft gold with anti cavitation already mixed in. Ive heard it can be ugly without it.

When I got my old 3930, I read up on basic diesel coolant cavitation issues, and how it affects certain liner types. Check.

It seems that once EGRs came into play on diesels, coolant flow rates went up significantly on many engines. I've heard that the OE 6.0 EGRs can get really stressed (to the point of failure) if the wrong coolant is used. If I owned any diesel post 2006, I'd make absolutely sure that any coolant I used met OE specs, as replacing the EGR is not the spendy part.

It's getting a little scary how critical some of these fluid specs have become.....
