It had to happen sooner or later. My wife hauls her horse on long drives for trail riding. She stopped at a restaurant to get something to eat and her truck wouldn't start. She was over an hour from home. Two hour round trip.

So she calls our roadside assistance provider, who can't speak english, and asked for a tow. She was told that they could tow the truck and trailer but could not tow the truck and trailer with a horse in it. The wife asked what good that was going to do her. Their reply was for her to take the horse out of the trailer. To which my wife replied "And do what with the horse?"

Luckily I was off work and hooked my truck up to the horse and trailer while her truck was towed to a dealer.

She was furious while I was taking her home. That she couldn't understand the person she was talking to on the phone. And that they suggested she take the horse out of the trailer.

We changed our roadside assistance provider the next day.

We have US Rider roadside assistance. They are built around assisting people towing horses. It's relatively inexpensive, and if you are in a situation like that, they will get a tow truck and a towing vehicle to you pretty quickly. They can also arrange layover for the horses if you are far from home.

We purchased it last year, and our truck died in January returning from a training session. I was able to coast off of the highway and get to the shoulder of a secondary road. They were able to locate us through the GPS on our phone, and had people out to us within an hour. The truck was taken to the shop, and the trailer and horse were taken to our home.

A rep called us back later that evening to make sure that we were home and safe. That was above and beyond, imo. Well worth the investment. We recommend them highly.

This is the plan we went with also. Costs a little more but then they are very horse conscious folks. We learned about them from horse riding friends.

I should have! At our age and as many years we have hauled horses we should have know better than to get into this situation. Sometimes a sledgehammer between the eyes is required. It won't be our last:)

+1 on US Rider if you want premium assistance with a horse. We did have them for several years and did call them one time when a trailer tire blew out. Their telephone people are great and they do follow up. I wasn't all that impressed with the local that they sent out, I don't think he was really equipped for a heavy truck/trailer though.

We have also had Coach Net. They cover all the RVs and your cars/trucks. However, they only cover a horse trailer if it has living quarters and they do not make special provisions for your horses. Again, we had another tire blow out and they responded very well also.

But for horse specific coverage, US Rider has a great reputation. They are well regarded in the horse industry.
