It can be far worse than damaged equipment.
========================================

Fourteen people died and 21 were injured in a horrific motorway accident in Salvador, Brazil, today.

A 48-ton tractor fell from a trailer as its driver took a bend on the BR-110 motorway, which bypasses the city of Inhambupe, Bahia, reports suggest.

The machine crashed head-on into the bus, which was coming in the opposite direction, killing 14.

........

The 43-year-old lorry driver who today was under arrest is said to have claimed to police that the tractor was tied to the trailer and he was unaware of what may have been the cause of the accident.

Observers at the scene who inspected the trailer pointed out that they could not see any straps, chains or securings that would have held the tractor in place.

Standing on the back of the trailer, one unnamed local said: 'There is nothing here to show that the tractor was secured. It looks like it was just put on top of the carrier and transported without anything holding it from coming off.'

So how about this one? :laughing:

This was actually me before our recent camping trip. Me, wife, 4 girls (ages 7-15) and 2 y.o. boy... we needed the space! Even the suburban was not enough, last year we used my home-built hitch hauler, but this year had more to bring. I had put another receiver on the rear for possible bike-rack but decided this year to use a little trailer I had sitting around. I picked it up for practically free a few years ago and really haven't had a use for it... until now. Had to put new tires and wiring on it though. It actually drove much better this way vs. putting all the weight on the hitch carrier.

We are back now without issue, and thought maybe you would get a kick out of it. The trailer only weighed about 500 lbs (maybe). My only real worry was that I couldn't get the safety chains to the factory hitch, but because I was using an adjustable w.d. hitch, the were some adjstment holes to hook them on... not exactly perfect but I felt safe with it.

Mike;

Don't see anything wrong with your rig. The VL tongue on trailer should make it easy to back up, when you need to. Actually a great idea.

I think you wouldbbe a lot better off doing away with the hitch carrier and adding deck space to the trailer or adding a receiver to the rear of the trailer for your hitch carrier. That way the trailer is actually hitched to something designed to carry and control a trailer. My hitch carrier is sketchy with just the stuff i pile on it and it really rides above my box blade on my tractor.

I agree with you, but the trailer is what it is. I believe it is was originally designed as a wheelchair carrier so the deck is very small (made my magneta, their website shows many similar trailers but this particular one is not shown anymore) I got it through a deal with some other stuff and got it for around $20. I could not pass it it up, though at the time I had no immediate use for it. I tried giving it to my dad, but he has not come to pick it up in the last year so I figured it would be great for this use. The hitch carrier I built and am not in the least bit concerned for it's strength. The part that goes into the hitch is 2x2x1/4" and there is a 12" pre-fabbed receiver adapter that it goes into and welded around with about 6" of overlap. The frame for the platform is 2x2x1/4" angle and has 1/8" diamondplate filling it in. It's gotta weigh about 100#.

My main concern was the leverage it puts on the factory hitch, but the tongue weight of the trailer was probably 75# and a few hundred on the carrier. The reason I felt it safe was because I see similar hitch extenders (minus the platform) made for slide-in campers. The whole loaded trailer could be moved by hand around the campsite by just me. I preferred having the weight on the trailer vs. loading the crap out of the hitch carrier.

I guess it was lucky that I had to re-do the wiring since it made it easy to have the plug about 30" past the hitch.

you would think so :laughing: but with the back of the suburban loaded to the ceiling, that little trailer is absolutely invisible until it is at a pretty sharp angle.
