You guys are killing me... still have 14 years to full retirement age.

Almost all of my Law Enforcement and Firefighter friends have retired and they do have more coming in retired than I earn...

Like Davro said... What's a pension?

Come to the conclusion is something almost mythical from a time long ago... at least for my family... no one has ever had a pension... we work until we can't and then pass away.

I'm jealous too. At 49 years old I am planning to retire at 55. Maybe earlier.

I do get tastes of the independence when I take time off from work. It sure is nice to have weekdays to yourself. Can't even imagine having those weekdays to yourself year around!

Newbury - you must have received the same kind of financial advice I did. I began saving for retirement with my first job after college. My father lived thru the depression and it obviously left a great impression on him. Whatever, he never let me forget to save for retirement and that nobody was going to support me when, for whatever reason, I quit working. He was almost obsessive on this point and I finally had my wife deal with him on this issue - he wouldn't argue with her. Consequently, while I'm by no mean rich, if I watch my spending I'll be OK.

My Grandparents and parents were very much cognizant of the Depression.

My Grandmother made it very real when she would point out homes of neighbors lost back in the 30's

She also didn't approve of Stocks, Credit Cards and living Payday to Payday...

Yes, it was drilled into me DON'T BORROW, PAY AS YOU GO. It took me until traveling with the Army as a civilian before I got a credit card, and that as only because I HAD to. Now today I pay for almost everything with a CC and get "cash back". Of course it's no fee CC and always paid off so no interest charges.

There are times when I feel like a bird==light down here and scratch a bit, then flutter over to another spot and scratch a bit there. Never finishing the original project.
