I really enjoyed reading these 9 pages! Another year or two, and I'll join the "club" too.

I Retired after 48yrs as a airframe and powerplant technician (mechanic) and I could care less if I ever see another airplane. I took up a hobby I truly enjoy, I make hunting knives. I make them when I want and for whom I want. The price is in direct proportion to how much I like the person, and if I don't like them, the chances of getting a knife from me is between slim and none.
Love the FREEDOM.

You guys have done a great job of describing retirement. I especially like what Redbug said a few pages back - like how nice it is to go places during the week when less crowded, and stay home on most weekends and holidays. It's been nice to hunt when I want, not just Saturdays (Virginia just removed its ban on Sunday hunting this month), and fish when I want.

Now, I have the time to learn how to do things/fix things/make things myself that I just didn't have time to do before.

Most importantly, I've really gotten a chance to know and appreciate my wife more in the almost 2 years I've been retired. We work on things together, go more places together, and talk more...we have a big desk, open on both sides, and sit facing each other, each with a laptop, sharing and discussing things we read and learn. She's heard about more than one thread from TBN.

I'm also glad I have an always growing to-do list, and the health and motivation to work on them, when I feel like it :).

As with some other posters, I too have enjoyed reading the thread. Interesting to know a little of the background of some posters' names.

One thing that did strike me was the occasional reference by people who had tried their best as an employee, worked extra hours to help out, and generally accepted that by doing so they would eventually be recognised as a good employee. Then, as with me, it never happened. When I was in senior positions I was frequently told that I was too soft with my staff. Oh, yes? It is indeed tough at the top, but it is a lot tougher at the bottom, and since the idea of "fast tracking" graduates came in, many of them have never been at the bottom.

BTDT ... as was with the last place ...
after leaving ( a few of the good people also left the same day ) , the company fell flat on it's face and hasn't recovered after 7 months and is still in panic mode ... so much for their "tough on staff" methods ....

I was just short of retirement age and didn't need much to say the old Johnny Paycheck line.

being retired has its benefits and draw backs ... lately, I've been thinking of starting a part time business ( niche market , 2-3 hours a day , light work , and no one else is doing it yet ... but I hate the idea of traffic again.)

somebody , TALK ME OUT OF IT !!!!!

For me retirement is being able to do what I want, when I want and how I want. No more BS and no more having to deal with nepotism and politics.

I could always use some extra money, but I think most people feel that way whether they work or are retired.

Both my parents died shortly after retirement at 65. I vowed to retire at 60 and did. Have been retired nine years now and still have a few more years under me belt I think.

So nice to be able to things on my terms and not to have to worry about whether or not others like what I do. Freedom comes at a price - greatly reduced income, but I hold the cards these days :)

jaotguy, 'consulting firm'! No overhead, take 'em or leave 'em. Incorporate (LLPC, etc) and 1099 any help you get (Canadian version, if such exists) vs payroll.

btw: our family tradition (by default, or hereditary predisposition I guess) from our Dad to me & the sibs is to do what the others won't & don't ask for recognition ... just doing our job our own way. Big bro' & little Sis (has MS) are retired too & nobody dumps anything in our laps. Result, we don't know what to do with ourselves now. We do hang out once a week where Janet stays, something we haven't done for 45 yrs ... Yeah, it's all good. :)

No. Go for it - but if it is absolutely essential that you have to travel to your "work" then make sure you start and finish to avoid rush hour. Nobody wants to deal with you at 9 am anyway. I know of a small number of one man businesses that need a retail shop for what they do, but they are not open the same hours as bigger concerns. People soon find out when you and are not available. You do not want enough customers that you have to work 12 hour days.
