Wearing a sleep apnea mask?

I have been using a CPAP device since Jan.07.I could barely get an 8 hour day in the shop, and as far as driving our rig for a 3 1/2 hour drive to deliver machinery, well,I'm very lucky to have made trips without an accident.
It sure changed my life for the better.

I've been on CPAP for 5 years now. I had 76 interuptions per hour during my sleep study. My understanding is that you do not dream unless you enter REM sleep. I cannot remember dreaming for a long time prior to using CPAP. I now dream regularly. Some I remember, some I don't. I can't say I feel more energetic by using CPAP, but I do feel rotten if I don't. I was in an automatic car wash one time before using CPAP and the machine was moving forward and back over the vehicle and fell asleep. I woke up and saw the machine moving and thought I was moving and slammed on the brakes. The vehicle was obviously in park at the time. It scared the daylights out of me. That convinced me to do something. My regular doctor said I didn't fit the profile of someone with sleep apnea. The sleep study proved him wrong. I just checked the readout on my machine and am averaging 3 AHI in a 30 day period. The doctor said 5 or lower is good. Now I wish the wife would get it because her snoring is driving me crazy.

Have had my machine for about 100 days now and finally getting used to it. I don't normally sleep on my back and rolling over usually partially dislodges the mask (small one around nose only) causing leakage which wakes me up. Had 2nd visit with Dr. yesterday. Asked him about taking melatonin to help get to sleep. He told me that it was a good idea to try but said to take it 5-6 hours before time you want to fall asleep. I tried taking it about 30 minutes before going to bed for prior 3-4 days. Took one at 6 PM yesterday and by 9:30 was getting really sleepy so guess Dr. was right about taking it early. Slept straight thru from about 10 PM to 4:30 am.

Now of I can just get used to sleeping on my back!

Rick, You will, although it is not necessary if you prefer sleeping on your side or stomach. Just give the tube some leeway so that it does not pull off the nose mask.

I sleep on my side and change sides at least once or twice a night, but no serious problem with keeping the mask on. I guess it only came completely off once, and very rarely wakes me by leaking.

What do you do if you have to take an overnight trip? Do you take the mask with you or are you good with one night away?

I've been wondering about that myself; whether I want to take it with me. I have a cousin who says his father-in-law never goes anywhere overnight without taking his with him.

For me, it's worth the time and trouble to take it along. Did NOT a couple of times and did lots of tossing and turning to go to sleep, waking up a bunch, and then not being able to go back to sleep. With it....nod off, stay asleep, and when I get up for the john, go right back to sleep...........

I dump the water in the reservoir, pack the unit on the bottom of the bag and then stash the tube and mask wherever they go. I carry a bottle of water to use and that's it.....NO PROBLEMS and worth the 5 minutes of hassle..........God bless........Dennis

Yep, take it with you. I failed to take it one time, and spend a "heck" of a sleepless night.. I was about 90 miles away, I met the wife next day halfway. I was not going to spend another night without it. I have been a member of the "Borg Collective" for about 6 years.

The mask makes a big difference in your life. Is it sort of a pain the he kiester some times? Sure, but, the benefits outweigh the problems. I use a full face, I have tried the nose only, that works fairly well, but I still tend to let my mouth fall open, and that is a problem. The "nose knives" I tried, but could never get used to the pain. I was told my nose would toughen up after a while, but I could not stand them more than a night or two.

To sleep on your side adjust your mask to the correct tension, not too tight, but not too loose. and put your head on the pillow, but let the mask hang over in the air. It is best to shave each evening and have a clean shaven face. It is important to change a full face masks face seal parts at least every six months. Air leaks are the enemy of good sleep.

I use heat and humidity, but keep it on low. I don't like the mask to get too hot or too wet..You just have to adjust it to suit you, but my nose dries out if I don't use some heat and humidity. Yes you must use distilled water, and carry a bottle of it with you when you travel.

So do I like having sleep apnea? Nope, but I can tell you that untreated sleep apnea will result in a much sooner death than treating it.
