What's your method for crow control?

Aside from the obvious 870 Express...

I've never had much luck with scarecrows... the birds are too smart. The oldtimers around here always claimed that shooting a crow and leaving it would deter others... a new twist is to tie a fake crow to a stake.

Yep, I've not only seen it done, but have done it. For some reason or other, I only had a problem with crows in my garden one year. When I planted my sweet corn, they got every single kernel, and they got about half of the second planting. I'd go outside and away they'd go, I went out back and fired a shot in the air, scared them off, but they came back. I finally shot one, tied it on the fence by the garden, and no more problem.

I don't mean nothing by this, but just saying.... Crows are a protected species. They are also a carrier of West Nile Virus, and the crow population can be used as indicator if you have west nile in the area. Like I said, I don't have an agenda, other than informing. SSS

Bird, I've been considering making a "dead crow" from a couple of black rags... you've just convinced me.

I learned long ago to start my corn in cell pacs, and transplant when it got up to 5".
Last week they pulled up my newly sprouted snow peas... today I chased them out of the buckwheat I had planted for a cover crop.

If only I could teach them to pull the weeds they way they do my crops...

Please clarify. NC has a crow hunting season. I thought that you could shoot them at any time during the year in NC if they are doing damage to crops.

I've seen corn cobs with the husks splayed out to resemble wings painted black used as deterrents...FWIW

Steve there can be a crow season, but there are quite a few Federal regulations from a treaty we signed with Mexico.. And I think like almost any animal if you can show damage, you can usually "handle" the problem.
