What's your method for crow control?

Crows are pretty amusing. I'll take a little crow damage over the damage done by the over protected, over populated suburban deer.

Man, that is a fact. We have near constant deer damage to our ornamentals. While we have crows, I can't see they have damaged anything we have.

. . . I finally shot one, tied it on the fence by the garden, and no more problem.

What Bird said.

James K0UA,
In Louisiana, crows are not protected. Here's our regs on crows:
BLACKBIRDS AND CROWS: The season for crows shall be Sept. 1-Jan. 1 with no limit; however crows,
blackbirds, cowbirds and grackles may be taken year round during legal shooting hours if they are
depredating or about to depredate upon
ornamentals or shade trees, agricultural crops, livestock, wildlife, or
when concentrated in such numbers as to cause a health hazard. Louisiana has determined that the birds listed
above are crop depredators and that crows have been implicated in the spread of the West Nile virus in
humans.
I'm a farmer, and I ALWAYS have "agricultural crops." :D

Where I live if you want a garden you have to kill a few crows every year, other wise you will get nothing but root crops.

A ten or twelve foot pole placed near the garden with a # 1 1/2 to # 2 coil spring trap placed on top will turn the trick if other responsibilities keep you away from home during the day.

The USDA kills thousand's every year and who knows how many tax dollars spent in the process.

Point taken... and if it was just a little damage I could deal with it. I don't mind sharing after all...Yet crows can wipe out 100% of any large seed crop that I plant... and are doing it. :(
At least I can put up a fence to keep the deer out; and if that doesn't work they sure do taste good. ;)

OTOH, although I've eaten more than my share of "crow" over the years  I've never developed a taste for it and find it quite impalatable. :p

Legal Status

Crows are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, a federal act resulting from a formal treaty signed by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, under this act, crows may be controlled without a federal permit when found “committing or about to commit depredations upon ornamental or shade trees, agricultural crops, livestock, or wildlife, or when concentrated in such numbers and manner to constitute a health hazard or other nuisance.”

States may require permits to control crows and may regulate the method of take. Federal guidelines permit states to establish hunting seasons for crows. During these seasons, crows may be hunted according to the regulations established in each state. Regulations or interpretation of depredation rules may vary among states, and state or local laws may prohibit certain control techniques such as shooting or trapping. Check with local wildlife officials if there is any doubt regarding legality of control methods.

Crows ate or ruined all of the first wave of my tomatoes this year - picked the plants clean but left the immature green tomatoes lying on the ground. After that I glued scrap cds together so they were shiny on both sides and hung them around the garden. As surprising as it may be the blowing in the wind and shimmering in the sunshine seems to have worked - there's been no further damage in the last month.
