What are your thoughts on using Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck oil 5w-40 in NH T2310 40 hp Tractor?

How many hours a year?

I am a big synthetic fan but I also believe that no matter what oil should be changed once a year. For that reason my standby generator, my ZTR, and my tractor get dyno oil since they only get 50 hours or so per year. For this reason I see no benefit in using synthetic oils.

Now my 3 vehicles get synthetic oils and lubricants because of the high use.

+1

I use Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck oil 5w-40 in my tractor engine. It's overkill, of course - these little engines without turbochargers or high pressure electronic fuel injection don't need an oil this good, but so what? Deere sez to change once a year no matter hours of use - no doubt due to accumulated water, soot, dirt, whatever in the oil. You don't want it sitting there all winter.

In my opinion the Mobil 1 TDT will be an excellent choice for your tractor. Relatively affordable, readily available and has a established record of use. It is the oil I like to use in my diesel engines.

I agree. The only exception for mine is winter use. If the engine needs to start in sub zero temps (regardless of hrs/yr), then I like synthetic to the ease of starting too.

I wonder if the "change every year" is still as relevant with todays oils. Synthetics also? For the two Kubotas list in my sig line, the manual uses hours of use for oil change interval with no mention of change at least once a year. Other maintenance jobs are specified at yearly intervals or every two years but not the OCI.

I have used synthetic in my NH TC33DA since the first oil change. Mostly because I have drums of the stuff for my commercial use also. Even if I didn't, I would probably still use a synthetic, primarily since my NH probably racks up as many hours in winter as in summer. I only change the oil once a year, in the fall. Like Chris, I don't rack up a lot of hours, but it is only a gallon of oil in my TC33, so I don't see any real waste is using the synthetic in there. Does make one wonder, if they have a compact tractor, along with whatever implements, mowers, etc than have for it, that they would worry about cost in using a synthetic oil when it is only a small amount. If it was taking 10 gallons per oil change like my semi truck, then it could reasonably be argued that if one is not racking up a lot of hours, the synthetic might be a bit extravagant. Most folks have no problem dropping more on a weekend going out to eat than they would spend once a year to change the oil in their compact tractor, yet they want to be misers about what they put in their engine. Go figure.

As for the changing once a year, it may not be necessary from a oil breakdown due to engine time idea, but I also have concern over condensation and its associated issues from lack of every day use of the equipment also. I suppose that would only be a concern depending on what area of the country one lives. With the broader temperature extremes of the upper midwest, I feel better just changing out the oil once a year. Again, it is only a gallon of oil. Sure isn't going to break the bank account.

If it meets the manufacturer's spec, then your golden. I leave oil in for years since I don't put many hours on some equipment and have never had a problem. Gas or diesel. I don't believe in changing oil just because it's been in the engine for a certain period of time. I do check for condensation under the oil filler cap and I also don't run the engines for very short periods of time. When they are used they always get run long enough to get good and hot and burn off any condensation.

I use synthetic in everything. Converted a 25 year old 240D to synthetic plus a nearly-as-old-Gravely. The Gravely actually quit using oil after the 3rd synthetic change.

Only change oil in my pickup and generator every 3rd year. Don't think need yearly changes in equipment that doesn't get used much but does get warmed up enough when used.

What I'd like to see changed is the every other year change to anti freeze in tractors and generators in light of the fact that current cars and pickups are allowed to go 100k miles now on anti freeze. Cuz how does one change out antifreeze in a generator sitting in a garden without getting anti freeze in my garden?

I think the ultra low sulphur diesel has really helped. Sulphuric acid formations has been a problem caused by the sulphur in the fuel/lubes and ingested...H2SO4 over the years. So, with that reduced and basic stocks that tolerate both high and cold temps, added to current technology additives, is a recipe for me to just change it when it gets dirty which I do. I use Shell Rot T 5w-40 which was recommended by my Cummins engine mfgr. It's C and S rated to the latest specs.
