Decided to bring home another Ford. This time, to make look parade-worthy. I told my wife it'll be ready in 2 years.
Anyhow, just thought I'd keep track of the process here.

The sheet metal (already removed) is junk.... every bit of it.
The gas tank itself it fine, but there are tons of busted bolts and make-shift fasteners all over the tractor. I'll be dismantling a bit, drilling and tapping. I've thought about doing paint/rust removal right away in one fell swoop (easy off, power wash, phosphoric acid, primer), but I might just start tearing parts off and prep along the way.

Did it run when you got it?

i did a ford 950 a ys ago that had nearly every bolt or stud from the transmission forward, and about half from the tranny back, busted off, cross threaded or stripped out, or stuck so bad they had to be drilled and extracted.

i did nothing but remove and repair fastner and holes for 2 weeks of work solid.

have fun!

Yes...
Actually, my father-in-law bought it last year as a favor to the guy that owned it. He and I got it drug home and tried starting it... only hitting on 1 cylinder (the cylinder with compression :) ). Did some digging and ended up pulling the head to have it rebuilt. The short block was in great shape (was replaced some odd years ago). Don't know why the head and gasket were so bad. Anyhow, the engine is together and purring like a kitten. Metal is bad, wiring harness is cobbled up, gauges don't work and there's a ton of broken studs throughout. Runs real good, the 2-stage clutch feels good and the gears are tight and quiet (no whining like I get from my well-used 860) and both brakes are working.

I'm pretty sure I followed along in a thread when you were working on it.

Same way with my 1951 Minneapolis Moline BF--compression on only one of the four cylinders. Sent the engine to the machine shop. $800 parts, $800 labor on that Hercules engine, reassembled to the short block configuration. Need to get the hydraulics rebuilt to finish the restoration.

Good luck.

Did the oven cleaner thing today. Looking through some earlier pics, I did manage to remove some of the blue paint, but that's about it. With the rain coming, I just wanted to get this thing in the barn... I'll finish the stripping/prepping right where it sits.... which probably means elbow grease.

I have a pile of garbage started and a pile of parts to refurbish... I'll have to get those pics another time.

Now I know why the tires sat so far away from the fenders.... extensions.

Forgot to mention....

That uncomfortable moment when you find out the tires you are removing, that you were 100% certain were not loaded are, in fact, loaded.

I don't know yet what they are filled with, but I'm wondering how to either store or dispose of whatever is them.

it could be water

it could be ww fluid and water

it could be antifreeze and water

it could be beet juice.

it could be CACl soloution

water? dump.

ww fluid / ww fluid and water? Dump on a concrete or asphalt surface it can evap from. the methanol should not be around anything that can drink it.. so don't dump it in the soil..

antifreeze and water? Take it to a reclamation facility.. while it MIGHT be eco safe PG, i'd bet on it being the dangerous EG. Many people get waste AF from garages to load tires... so figure it being the toxic stuff.

beet juice? Store it in a 55g drum for re-use. PS.. it will stink. And while it is not especially toxic... if you dump it out on grass in volume.. it will kill a patch.. and if it is dumped into a pond.. it can cause a fish kill due to increased BOD.

CACL soloution? store in a plastic drum, or a metal drum that you consider disposable. If it is dumped on grass/vegitation.. it will kill it. You can put cacl down on a gravel or dirt road to discourage grass growing in it and to control dust.
