PRECISELY!

One of the things I want to do, by the way, is learn how to weld. I got an arc welder as a birthday gift 4 years ago, and it has never been out of the box. :(

I hope it's not too hard to do, although I'm sure it's a skill that has to be developed by experience.

When I went to college, in the mid 70's, my college tuition was $17 per credit hour. Now it is about $400, per credit hour. ( same school ) We used to be able to make enough with summer factory jobs to pay tuition, and room and board. The costs of just school are way higher than what we had to pay. And the summer jobs are hard to find.
kids do need more help. Many good countries have free education but we do not and it is hurting the economy. All the young people that get out of school with a $60000 bill and no job, no car no house. All they can afford to do is pay back their College loans so they are not putting money back into the economy. This is not a good thing.

I think college loans are the problem... makes it too easy to get in debt and you're stuck with it.

As mentioned... scholarships, grants, not going away to college, two years at a Junior College and then finish at a 4 year, working, GI Bill, etc...

Some companies still offer tuition reimbursement and in medical... a doctor or nurse willing to serve an under-served area has the opportunity to reduce a portion of the medical loans over 4 or 5 years.

I wouldn't say we are retired but just starting a career change. Volunteering has to be at the top of the list. Both my spouse and myself volunteer year round at a state facility for developmentally disabled adults. We teach/coach them how to make flower and potted plant arrangements. They are probably the most upbeat positive people on earth. It's a pleasure to work with them in a small way.

OK, I've only been retired about a year and half or so and I now live on my dream 38 acres of heaven, so I have a question for those that have been retired longer:

How do you deal with the "I've got so many things to do, what do I start with first, the heck with it, I think I'll take a nap" overwhelming feeling???

Whatever you do, don't retire to TN, it SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been retired 7 1/2 years. It turns out that a lot of stuff doesn't actually need doin'.

The first 5 years have been driven by need. We were living in 400 sq feet in the barn for 2 years while we cleared land for a house site, looked for builders, etc...we NEEDED additional elect brought in, water well, more land cleared, ...you get the idea. I was doin' what needed doin' to "git 'er done". I am just now getting to the point of "gee, what project do I WANT to start?" It's kinda neat not worrying that it's taking me a couple of months to fence in 3 1/2 acres. No animals to put in it yet anyway. I am now in "piddle" mode....and LIKING IT!

The old GI bill went away years ago, and few companies offer tuition reinbursement. And you cannot get the GI bennies unless you have been in the service. I have had younger relatives that had to wait a couple of years to join, and any physical ailment gets you kicked out in a hurry. I believe in not taking on debt, but young people are really screwed - more jobs require a college degree, and that degree has become more expensive. Btw, California probably has better options than most places in this country.
