my sons are in their 40's. I have 6 granddaughters, aged 8, 10, 10, 12, 14, 22.

They've all driven the tractor around the yard (except the 8 yo) but haven't 'worked' it. I wouldn't even suggest they try the fergie , with the crunch box, no power steering and it's very long profile with the add on FEL and BH. They can all easily handle the 3016. I stay on it with them, at least the younger ones. The 14 yo is as big as an adult and reaches everything very well and handles it well by herself.

My Fergie was extremely reliable. I had it about 25 years and did a complete tear-down on it about 15 years ago.

So no, it didn't enter into my decision. I just got tired of horsing around the Fergie and wanted something new and easy to use in my old age.

I gave the fergie to my youngest son.

Thank you for your insight on this, Pilgrim. Your thread is quite interesting to the many of us who are in the same position you were when making your decision.

I can't find the post to give the person credit, so maybe he will jump in here and take the credit. Here's what he said about your Fergie and my 9n:

Those tractors were designed and built to do one thing very well-- pull. They can pull hard all day long. But bolting a loader to it, putting a brush mower behind it where you need to go forward- reverse- forward- reverse, that works okay, but was an afterthought to the original design-- pulling power.

The new machines, especially the compact machines, were designed and built knowing that most of them would be sold with a loader and many three- point attachments. The ability to run a loader, post hole digger, mower, and snowblower are built into them from the very start. Your experience seems to bear that out quite clearly.

Thank you again for such an interesting thread.

I am looking at my first ever tractor for my 3ac property. It is a 2014 3016 Mihindra shuttle with loader and back blade all in for $21000CA funds as I live in Canada. What you guys think of this price? I have done lots of research and this looks like the best unit for me. I will use it to move snow, dirt and gravel on my property. Let me know what you guys think as I haven't pulled the trigger on the tractor yet. Thanks

muzbomb,

It is hard for me to say if your pricing is good since it is Canadian. I purchased my 3016 shuttle Mahindra about 18 months ago with FL and rear 6' finish mower for approximately $18000 (US). Obviously, I felt that Mahindra best fit my needs. I looked at every brand within realistic driving distance.

Be sure to request all discounts that you qualify for.

$21000 ca = $17,364.25 us

I'd say that was in the ball park. I paid $24k for mine with HST, fel and bh. The bh was about a $6k add on. The HST is about 1k more than a shuttle. You're looking good based on my price.

Enjoy it, you'll love it.

My only quibble with this would be that the N series were specifically designed to go with the Ferguson 3 pt. lift system, primarily at least in the very beginning to replace horses pulling plows and the later pull type tractor plows (which were really just the horse drawn type modified to pull behind a tractor). Ford offered a variety of 3 pt. mounted equipment like disks, cultivators, mowers, blades, harrows, planters, etc. in the Dearborn line of implements. As mentioned these were implements to be pulled and were ground engaging. There was even a front loader I saw in the 1948 catalog. I will agree that they do not do well with a FEL and or Backhoe, but guys seem to make do with them, especially back in the day when there were few other options available. Thanks goodness for modern machinery like Mahindras in that size range that are affordable and capable.
