my question is what is the worst that can happen if you run a large logging winch on a smaller tractor. i have a 32 hp kabota and just bought a used large farmi for 350 bucks that is rated for 45 to 60 hp. will mine run it. will it ruin something on my tractor or on the the winch. any experience on this out there? thanks

I would say you're better off in the situaton you have now than running a winch with a lower HP rating on a bigger tractor. As long as it fits on the hitch, you should be fine.

I'd say you'll be fine as long as you use caution. An oversized winch can put a lot of stress on three point hitch components, especially the top link. It's not that you won't have the power....it's just that a 32hp tractor running a winch rated to pull maybe 10000 lbs will have plenty enough power to break itself if pushed to hard.

You will ruin your tractor, get shingles and bring seven years bad luck. Better not risk it, just PM me and I'll drive up to your place and give you $400, sight unseen. Anything to help a new member out!

Sounds like a great deal and like the others have said, used wisely you should be fine.

Since the winch will only develop as much pull as you have PTO power to feed it, I think the big winch will "de-rate" itself.
In other words, a winch rated to pull 12000 lbs when fed 60 Hp will only pull 6000 lbs when fed 30. But you will have a heavier built, heavier weight winch that should last a lot longer at the reduced working loads. The added weight may help stability a bit at the cost of a little lifting power. Plus you'll have a well matched winch if you ever get a bigger tractor. At $350, you darn near stole that winch, even if it needs a complete overhaul. Use it and enjoy!

Agree that you stole the winch, and if it does need an overhaul, it is actually very easy to do so. What Farmi model is it? I run a 601 on a Hesston 100-90 and am very happy with the combination. I have a Kubota 3710 and I have serious doubts about that tractor even being able to get the 601 off the ground.

An additional consideration is that these winches need the weight of the tractor and the strength of the top link to work effectively. I do hear the words of the member who says the winch will de-rate itself based on the lesser pto power of the tractor, but I would be very careful you don't pull the tail end out of your tractor, especially when winching on the top pully.

In your situation, I would always use the lower snatch block on that farmi when winching. This to substantially reduce and redirect the tension off the top link from straight back to into the ground and to the lower links.

hey guys, thanks for the info. i am new to this logging winch work. I pick it up tommorrow. the guy thought it was a Farmi but wasn't sure. It is old and is the style that has 2 legs that drop down to dig in the ground. most paint rusted off but kept in barn and nothing is frozen so i have high hopes i won't have to do much. He said it worked fine last time he used it 10 years ago. And to think i went to buy a used 351 for $2200 but it was sold when i got there. was very upset then but very happy now.

Nice find! I missed one that was local to me for $600 in early August. I would have given him $600 for it without asking a question. I was on out of town on vacation, but as customary was local checking Craigslist ads, when it went for sale. It was gone in two blinks. Still kicking myself for going on vacation ;)

Maybe someone else would know but is the line speed (gear ratio) the same for the smaller winches vs the larger ones? I've never looked into it. Or are they the same and just the force at which the clutch will slip different? If it's just the clutch then you should be able to adjust it to slip at a lower force to prevent damage to your tractor.

Just go easy on the clutch rope for the first few times you use the which.

You should mostly watch the tractor when skidding. If it's getting bucked around too much, don't pull as much on the clutch. Another thing, since you're new to PTO winches, they say 540 rpm, but things happen plenty fast for me at half that. You don't gain anything but speed by revving higher (assuming you aren't stalling or lugging the machine). Especially the first few times you use it.

You'll love your winch. I can't imagine life without mine. I did good for $900, but you sir really got a smoking deal.
